I watched Demolition Man for the first time
posted 3 years ago by Smith1980 3 years ago by Smith1980 +75 / -0

I watch Demolition Man for the first time the other night. I always heard people say it predicts our current time and I definitely see that. The fines for profanity were funny, but hate speech laws are worse than that. Also the banning of meat and and salt

That film REALLY called out the future (our present) and also how vulnerable the west is to a hostile actor. If the west didn't have nukes or hostile elements were able to infiltrate to strike from within, it would collapse quick.

Also did anyone figure out the whole 3 shells bit?

John Spartan, you are fined one credit for a sotto voce violation of the Verbal Morality Act.

Even action movies can be a teaching tool. This is how I learned that sotto voce is Latin for that fake whisper people do to actually draw more attention to what they are saying.

Huh, I'd rather just use a bidet if toilet paper is out

Which the film also predicted. The great toilet paper shortage of 2020.

Got a bidet, never looked back.

Anyone who cleans their own toilet should have a bidet. The heated seat is the bee's knees and makes it attractive to squat to pee.

I'm not a fancy lad, no heated seats for me, I have the sub $30 turn and squirt. Only thing I can bitch about is the water temp, it's not... pleasant during the winter. But I'm not trusting my browneye to one that shoots warm water, what if it malfunctions?

Typical failure I have experienced is that the heater burns out. I'm in FL so I have lived with this for almost a year and not felt compelled to replace it.

I also like the fact that because the main villain is called Phoenix and Stallone's speech pattern, it sounds like he's playing the penis game whenever he's shouting his name.

Don't worry if you didn't get it, it wasn't supposed to make sense. There's a video on YT explaining it. Basically, they were brainstorming, and the guy or someone he knew had 3 seashells on his desk (or something) and they decided to go with that. I'm paraphrasing, so I could be wrong on some of the details, but that's basically it.

EDIT: Full explanation and timestamped: https://youtu.be/QXvXNiOSPPM?t=240

Also from KnowYourMeme:

On December 5th, Redditor Uncleluke2 created a post on /r/movies claiming he heard an explanation of the three seashells during a Q&A session with Demolition Man screenwriter Daniel Waters. "I won't tell you the actual secret, but I'll tell you where it came from. There's a scene where Stallone has to use a restroom. I'm trying to come up with futuristic things you'd find in there. I was having trouble, so I called my buddy, another screenwriter across town, asked him if he had any ideas. Ironically enough that guy was taking a dump when he answered the phone, looked around his bathroom and said 'I have a bag of seashells on my toilet as a decoration?' I said 'Ok, I'll make something out of that.'"

Yeah, the whole idea is to highlight just how different things are in the future to where even the most rudimentary activities like toiletries are completely alien.

The whole politically correct, not allowed to swear, sexless soy people thing was accurate, but the mythological noble poor is straight out of the leftist playbook. Also, depicts a future where there is no crime and everything is clean. In reality, crime is rising, infrastructure is crumbling, and we are overrun with third world dirtversity.

Back in the 90s there was still a cultural residue left behind by Star Trek, this idea that the future would be a time of unlimited progress and that a technological utopia was on the way. That had largely dissipated by the 2000s, that's when all science fiction became gritty and grimdark.

And even ST:ENT was all like "Hey, we're shiny-eyed youngsters going out into the big ol' world for the first time, absolutely certain we'll make friends everywhere, because we're super-nice! The Vulcans said something about not everyone is like them, but hey, it's us!" .... [several episodes later] "Why does everyone shoot at us?"

They started out with bugger all for weapons, and had to argue for better weapons and shielding .... right up until the Xindi cut a nice trench in North America.

Same reason(s) Greta and Hogg were appointed as notable; strategically promoting feelings over facts. When the root cause of a calamity also benefits your cohort, you better have a shield to distract the dutiful citizenry. Those who are bad at negotiating and general social awareness are both essential for many peoples' fortunes, and the root cause of preventable collective misery. Pull some strings, make it taboo to insult the poors (but only the non-threatening kind, fuck dem rednecks) , while your at it, paint some inconvenient policies and virtues as anti-poor; divide-and-conquer.

So do your part, and blame some victims today!

Demolition Man, 1984, Brave New World, and evangelicals were all correct in their predictions but wrong in they didn't realize how bad it would get. Probably the only one who got it right was that Civil War era Confederate (I forgot his name) who predicted progress would lead to transgenderism.

Few years ago on a polish subreddit users had a argument about dystopian books (which was locked of course, because one guy as an example of doublethink mentioned how everyone knows a guy in a dress is a guy but can't say it out loud).

I had an argument with a mod about Brave New World and provided few examples about how people today are slaves to dopamine and lack any kind of self-restraint. Of course I was downvoted to oblivion, but what made me angry was not the dislikes and overall rudeness of NPCs towards me, but the idiotic take from the moderator:

"Brave New World is a book about everyone being happy and one idiot having a problem with it"

I fucking hate those people

The only thing that movie got wrong was the attitude towards sex. In that movie sex was considered harmful and they restricted it. Today, we expose small children to sex acts in the form of drag shows. That was the ONE thing they got wrong.

My favorite heinlein is The moon is a harsh mistress followed by The man who sold the moon

I have Exegesis but need to read. It. I don’t think I have Penultimate Truth unless it’s in one of the collections of his short stories I have. What did you think of the end of A Scanner Darkly? I love how the movie included Dick’s tribute from the book and it was very interesting how the govt was producing the drug it was fighting. Endless cycle.

I’d love a proper film or TV adaptation of Moon is a Harsh Mistress but not with modern Hollywood. So many others as well. Orphans in the Sky or Farnham’s Freehold. I’ve always wanted a more book accurate Starship Troopers.
