I'm more interested in the top paragraph. It's the fashion today for the left to claim that America used to welcome immigrants and that securing our borders and warning of demographic replacement is modern racism/xenophobia.
Looks like the founders had the same exact concerns, and weren't on the side the modern left claims.
America was very explicitly founded as a protestant white, particularly Anglo, ethnostate. Here Franklin shows they weren't even particularly fond of being Germanized, and when the Mormons appeared it was legal to shoot them. The nation of immigrants and religious tolerance narrative was crafted by a Jewish Catholic coalition in order to break the WASP power structure in the early 20th century. It'd be more accurate to say America is a nation of settlers that carved civilization out of the wilderness through pain and hardship, while immigrants has a connotation of people moving into an already established society. The left will always retort something about American Indians, which really just proves the point about the fate of a people with unsecured borders.
The “American Indians” had no unified culture or society. It would be like saying Neanderthals were the original settlers.
And despite that, most early settlers went to great pains to respect the boundaries of native lands when they were aware of them. The settlers probably were trampling on sacred grounds, but as a tribe you don't get to say "the spirits granted us all plains as far as the eye can see to the big sea to the east" and expect to be taken seriously. The more the savages raided and killed settlers, the less the White Man gave a damn about their territorial claims.

Basically everyone north of the Mediterranean are white. It starts to get iffy around the Med. Slavs are a grey area. Greeks and Sicilians are definitely "swarthy".
I understand that Greeks and Sicilians are darker skinned, but I'm not sure what race the are purported to be mixed with. So there is a natural phenomenon where people who live in sunnier climates will be darker skinned. That is independent of race, IMO. At the coarsest, there are only a few races. I guess people are asserting that Meds are part African? If you assume they are mixed, I guess it depends on what you think of Arabs. I have always broadly thought of Arabs as Caucasian if not white, if that makes any sense. They're not sub-Saharan African. They're not Oriental. So what would they be?

There have been extremely few Caucasian Arabs. Really the most by far was a few hundred fighting in and around Chechnya at one time. Other than that I only heard about one Palestinian "refugee" randomly living in Dagestan.

They're Middle Easterners, and Central Asians in the case of Turkics generally but the Turks are rather Turkified. It's not racial, it's regional and linguistic.
The Caucasian languages are totally different than the Semitic ones like Arabic (Mountain Jews aside), and also totally different than most of the European languages as well as Persian etc (Indo-European).

As a guy whose ancestors include some who came from southern Germany in the mass waves of Palatine immigration in the early 1700s as dirt poor peasants escaping famine (durr hurr, whites never experienced discrimination or hardship), I'm triggered.
To be fair, he wasn't wrong at all. Even today there are major differences between the English-descended Americans vs German-descended Americans vs Italian-descended Americans etc.
Germans are a strange case. They never united into a nation-state, unlike the rest of Europe. The modern concept of "Germany" is barely 30 years old. They've always existed in some form of empire. Even the first half of the past century could be considered a Prussian-led German empire.
Despite not apparently having their own shit together, the presence of Germans acts as a multiplier for other Europeans. There are accounts of Germans in Ireland during the famine who did fine and wrote letters to the effect of "I don't know what these potatoniggers are complaining about." Despite Franklin's bitching here, America's first century could be described demographically as "German people, English law," as basically anyone who lived west of the Atlantic coast was German (or Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish).
