I taught English in Korea. One year, they hired a black teacher.
But only after they held a meeting of the Korean faculty to vote on whether they'd allow it, and then a vote of the parents to see if they'd allow it. I have no idea how close the votes were or weren't, but they hired a black teacher.

Ok so is this guy talking about the military or civilian population. As if its the military that's stupid, these are people trained to kill to defend their country and traditions. If they're all 'touchy feely' there's less chance of pulling the trigger.

it's both, they have mandatory military service for men. they also have an ultra materialistic and competitive society, ugly, fat, poor, under performers in schools and later in jobs are absolutely looked down upon

Is there such a thing as living humble peaceful life in South Korea? Or is society structured in such a way that you are expected to move up the corporate ladder or change job if cant?
Don't know enough about South Korea to answer that but if it's like Japan's work mentality, they either assume you'll stay in the same position or at least company forever or they will make your life hell to make you quit if they don't like you.
Unfortunately the lifetime employment guarantee that Japanese companies used to have has gone out the window in favor of part-time/temp workers. It's still a thing in the biggest corps like Mitsubishi but generally Japan is more like America now in that you're never totally safe from unemployment.

He is a dual citizen. If you are a male Korean citizen they have mandatory military service. He could have renounced it at 18, but didn't for some reason.
My question is this: what if the person doesn't speak Korean? Guy shows up for mandatory military service and has never been to the country before and doesn't speak their language, what do they do?
