I work in tech, mostly support and admin stuff and a bit of scripting. My team is seriously overworked and my team lead has been asking for a new hire for more then a year. We finally got a new guy, he is Mexican. That in itself is not important but I was spending time trying to explain to him what we are doing on this project and the guy does not even know how to ssh to a host. When I got hired I had to pass tests on networking, bash scripting and linux, the tests I took are not enough for what we do and should have covered a lot more but this guy knows less then a high school student that likes computers.
I'm so done with affirmative action bullshit. I have nothing against the guy and wish him all the best but this is demoralizing. We've been so freaking overworked for so long, fuck this crap.
Reminds me of when we were working with a boatswain mate and his undesignated crew. At one point he leans in and says want to see something funny? He then split the group into guys and girls then sent them off to move the zodiacs. The guys moved their boat immediately while the girls did pretend attempts to lift the boat. They never did lift it, instead the guys came and did the work for them. That is diversity, the strong covering for the weak.
Lol my dad has all sorts of stories like this from his time in the Navy (78ish-late00s). Women not being able to pull their weight (often literally when it came to chains and whatnot. Pretty dangerous apparently), coincidentally getting pregnant right before their ship was due to set sail, all sorts of nonsense.
I can’t imagine what it’s like now, deck rigging was a hilarious display when women were involved. This onesided “equality” is insanity.

A couple of years ago a team I work with within my big company did a diversity hire and hired a totally unqualified woman who was essentially a secretary to run a department. Pissed off a 15-year employee who at least wanted an opportunity to be considered and he left. She lasted about two years and I hope left or was fired, but I'm sure if I were to look she was probably promoted to something else. The area that team was responsible for had a 1-year head start over a lot of other markets and a few years later they are in dead last at finishing their projects. They finally about a year ago hired some good people (both white guys no less), but it's the type of work that has a long lead time on a lot of things and good management can only clean up so much shit in a certain amount of time.
The team I work in is small, we are 4 guys so having one diversity hire has a much bigger impact. Our workload is unmanageable, we are at the point where we are putting in unpaid overtime so we do not get flooded.
That's a bullshit trick companies like to pull. I say let it flood; sit down with your team and hash out what can reasonably done in a day, do it, and go home. Let the manager in charge of hiring fill in the gaps.

You don't owe them anything OP, they're treating you like shit, why would you do work for them for free? They're overworking you because they see all the work being done, because you're doing it for free. They'd maybe not have gone with such a shitty hire if they knew the extent of the problem
I've got a job and boss I think are great, they get 10-15 over on urgent matters. But in return I get flexibility, or they remind me to bill me for it. I know the real world doesn't finish at 5:00 on the dot, particularly in small orgs. But don't work for free, time is the most precious thing you have, its the only resource that matters. Why give it to people who don't respect you or your time. Let them reap what they have sown.
Or just quit, preferably coordinate for everyone to quit all at once.

The job itself is not bad, the pay is good and the colleagues are nice but I guess is time to make a move.

I got saddled with a diversity hire more than once. Basically it came down to either I do their job for them and they get credit, or they complain to my boss that I didn't "mentor" them well enough and I get dinged because I can't say "he is retarded" and keep my job.

I hosted a gauntlet of interviews recently. I have no interest in discriminating on the bases of race, gender, or national origin. We took candidates from a recruiter. 90% of the candidates were African or Indian. We pre-informed candidates that they would be tested on technical requirements, but many of them showed up and straight up refused the technical requirements. I couldn't understand most of the interviewees. We had one female candidate who dropped and f-bomb and claimed a couple forms of mental illness in the interview. It got to the point where I would just dread interviews depending on the name.
We ended up hiring 2 mediocre white guys and one black guy who was the star candidate.
I don't know that we had a policy to prefer affirmative action candidates, but I'm 90% sure that our recruiter did, because that's all they would send us.
That was an obvious signal to anyone with half a brain that you should avoid her like the plague. A "woke' hiring manager would see her as a potential diversity hire based on neurodivergence and gender, and once she got her foot in the door you'd never be able to get rid of her unless you literally caught her in some form of gross negligence - and even then she'd probably try to sue the company for discriminatory practices in terminating her employment. Congrats on dodging that bullet.
Exactly. No one said it out loud, but this is why she made it to round 3 before we finally put it to bed. Someone really wanted the "different" "girl" and no one wanted to admit she'd be a liability even though we were all thinking it.

The black guy in this case really was the best candidate. From his name, I assumed he was northern European. Either way, he did actually do the best. Of course, I'll never know how many candidates they didn't send us.

I noticed that too. I was pretty shocked at some of the things I'm hearing coming out of interviews.
I live in South Africa. I hoped that the rest of the world would look at how badly affirmative action worked out in practice for everyone here, and that they would have avoided making the same mistake.
Instead, it seems the entire West has doubled down on hiring people who are not only incapable of doing the job, but who have no intent or desire of actually learning how to do to the job.
When I started working in 2004, yes, the number of older staff who were white and male was disproportionate compared to the demographics. However: a) they were competent, b) they got shit done, and c) the distribution of the younger staff was closer to the local population. When someone got hired or promoted, you just thought "Oh, they must be good at their job."
Fast forward to today: If a female "PoC" gets hired, the assumption is always that they only got the job because of "diversity", and HR will blatantly tell people that they won't even make the shortlist because they're forced to pick candidates based on skin colour and sex in order to meet government quotas.
Ironically, if a white person or a male gets a job, people will assume they must be damn good at their job if HR had to accept the decision to hire them instead of a diversity hire.
In closing, as ghostfox said, the only reason things haven't been run completely into the ground is because the competent people are busting their asses off working double time to cover for these people.

I'm not sure this is affirmative action. This is people are getting stupider. I'm in tech as well and in a hiring position. I've been recruiting for 4 months and I'm going to have to compromise on our already low standards to get any one in. Three years ago my applicant pool would have been full of promising candidates from the experienced veteran to the new and hungry college grad. Now I'm lucky if I can find a high school grad that can correctly identify a computer.

People have been getting less skilled and less motivated for a couple generations now, but i think it's finally just crossing the threshold where new technology can't make up the difference and cover up the decline any more.
Some of these people getting hired act functionally retarded and have literally 0 skills. Like they can't even do double digit addition in their head or string together a complex sentence. It's fucking absurd.
My job also can't find any new hires. They're all scary (either addicts and criminals or just flat out idiots), and even when we hire them they either fuck up continually until we fire them or they just stop showing up to work.
We've been making simple color coded instruction pamphlets and leaving them by the computers so that these morons can figure out to enter "10" instead of "20" but they literally can't get it. Even with the instructions right there. Dozens of tries, weeks, and they literally just can't assimilate basic information or memorize simple numbers. They can barely spell two-syllable words. And these are all white people in a 98 percent white area.
It's actually absurd and our country can't go on like this.
Do you have drug tests? A high school girl was telling me she guessed about 80% of the people at her old high school (the richest public school around for miles) do drugs of some sort, and not just weed. Most of these students go off to college, but I bet they aren't quitting the drugs.
How much of this is hyperbole? Because I've still got mad impostor syndrome every time I go job hunting and I can't tell if recruiters are desperate or just don't realize I'm a bad fit for some of the roles they come to me with.

This is why our team doesn't use HR for any new positions. If we need someone we go by referrals from the group. The first time HR sees them is when we're walking them over to fill out their paperwork.

So far B is a fact, no one has any illusion about this being anything else then an affirmative action hire. But he may end up being fine, he does not seem the type to shove identity politics, just a random dude that somehow was hired in a field that he knows little to nothing about do to being a visible minority. Time will tell if he catches up, hopefully I will find a new job by then.

It may be affirmative action, but it may also be the desperation of employers to hire literally anyone with a pulse.
I kind of doubt that but I'm not ruling it out. The position has a decent pay and I could find someone for it if I wanted. But yes the guy could be great if given a chance so who knows, my problem comes from the fact we really need help and being given someone who will take a long time before he can be of help, will be a drag on the team while we are drowning. On top of the fact that there is 0 chance he did anything decent on the technical tests.

The person I'm dealing with keeps pushing DIE efforts in hiring, which I can't do anything about, but she keeps shitting the bed with either recruits she thought would be perfect DIE candidates who are utterly incompetent, or mostly black men who literally do not care about any Social Justice stuff.
She's beating her head into a wall to slowly learn that competency is way more important than DIE, and that when you sacrifice competency for DIE, the consequences are severe.
