They loved spouting about poor housing conditions, how we need to do more, etc. When I asked them if they wanted to come help tear down moldy drywall and clean drains in low income housing it was “too much”. Liberals are dumb people with no experience outside of their bubble. They latch onto causes they have no knowledge of and scream until someone else comes to fix the problem.

It's their way of saying that they're better than you because they think about this stuff and empathize with the down-trodden, while most people are too humble to lie that they truly think about and care for the down-trodden or just don't brag about the charity work that they do.
The thing about "thoughts and prayers" is the knowledge that there is nothing you can do to help them is implicit in the statement. There's a certain humility to it. That's why it's thoughts and prayers to xxx mass shooting, and not "let's do another pointless gun grabbing law that benefits the Democrats".

Oddly enough when I was still on reddit many years ago I got the distinct impression that an awful lot of those who were very active on the various UK subreddits were actually Americans. They seemed to have these very weird caricatured view of the country and there was just something "off" about them. Some obviously came off as very sad left wing blow hards - I have encountered people like this in my sisters friend circle from university. You also do get a very vocal Scottish nationalist crowd - they come off as somewhat genuine. I do know people like that exist.
Same thing with people who claimed to be Irish - always distinctly bitter and very anti-English even though I have literally not encountered a single person from Ireland who actually held views like this and I visit the country all the time and have travelled to the most remote corners where the local pub is also the local shop and petrol station and many people speak Gaelic.
Back when I still used Reddit, whenever I’d see a particularly insane take on r/politics, I used to go through their profile and more often then not I’d find that they were from Canada or Europe.
150,000 of them are Ukrainians literally paid to control the narrative on various social media. An untold but immense number of them are Chinese 50 Cent Army slaves doing the same. The major social media watering holes are dead and they were murdered.
The alternative explanation is that they always believed this was the end state of their ideology and were simply lying about it to gain broader acceptance.
