Look at the map. The whole point of the other four regions that Russia has taken is to protect and re-connect Crimea. Crimea is the whole reason for this war, ultimately, just as it has been for hundreds of years.

And no man would be allowed to touch another's man fertile woman under penalty of death.
The process is actually pretty standard. Things hit a rough patch, start going downhill and instead of returning to their roots, franchises turn to DEI for easy bootstrap money thinking they just need a bit of a push to get them over the hump.

With no force driving them, conservatives are never actually able to conserve anything. Even a big and heavy rock will be moved eventually by dedicated activists, who were usually left-wing in the past.
This means that if we want to bring back our traditions, for example, we need more rabid activists for tradition. This is difficult to achieve. Like I'm too old and busy to be much of an activist. The best target market for selling activism is colleges, but those are mostly taken over by woke ideologues.
