Don't they always say representation is important because people want to see themselves on screen? Guess who plays video games? Guess why default characters, such as the vault dweller, used to look like a white male?
It's not just a phase for idiots and weirdos that haven't seen enough of the world yet. It's much more complex than that. It's a way of interpreting the world. This doesn't just fall out of fashion.
You could always make black rogues and pickpocket non-stop and randomly beat people. We could get Larian talking about how they don't like racist depictions of their characters in their fantasy world.
Players don't want to create an alternate character to escape their hated selves - non leftists don't hate themselves. We just want to jump through a fucking Stargate to get into a different, cooler world. Making a character like myself is the closest thing to a buss pass to other worlds.
That's the difference between the two parties. We're not terrible. We don't hate human nature, human biology, or our own bodies.
Person with a horrificly bright cheap hair dyejob, 80s Magnum PI mustache and prescription tits: "Why are people making their characters look normal? Doesn't everyone secretly want to look like a carnival freak?"
I think the average dude just go with the default option or barely changes a few things so the character doesn't look grotesque (which is becoming increasingly harder).
This is why I don't really play triple A western games any more. Most of them seem to have some sort of weird hangup against white and male and I'm not even white. They forget to make how to make fun game in the process of getting woke.
Honestly, I usually go female in character creators and probably would've picked something weird... were it not for the fact the game immediately asks you afterwards what you're attracted to.
At that point I just thought...'Then I'll go for the stand-in'.
I've seen something before where the genders were inversed and everyone was picking the opposite gender. The male characters you saw were female players.
White human male has always been the most popular D&D character, only followed by white elf male, white half-elf male, white dwarf male, and white halfling male. Starting to see a pattern? The other strange races are simply niche, and have always been niche. I find that people who play them are also the people who constantly ask to play something out of the Monster Manual just to be different. Edge lords, the lot of them.
Indeed. Doesn't look like skin color was included, a bit back WotC used their online platform to track race/class (apologies for no archive, but the table doesn't seem to show up in the archive) combos and the top 5 were:
This is why the Sarkeesian types don't count create-a-character games as games with female protags. The vast majority of players just make a regular dude. It doesn't count unless you are being forced to swallow the SJW dick.
If they make the female designs actually look good , more players would play the female character. But they hate that too. As you said they don't want people to have free options they want to force what THEY want on to others.
What is it about game development and the gaming industry in general that attracts so many degenerates? Also is this an actual "knows how to code" developer or just a "community manager" or qa or marketing or some other hanger on?
Since this was a SM post (Steam is SM, change my mind), I'm guessing CM. But it's possible it was one of the graphic artists.
I work at a bank, and even our graphic artists are pretty... artistic. They're all from the same nearby liberal city. Every variety of bubbly twink and trendy hole-eared fatboy - same clonestamped boyish pixie girlfriends.
The only BLM shit they've been a part of that I could find is them retweeting somebody else's BLM shit, a group they were partnered with to reveal details of BG3 rescheduling the event those details were going to be revealed in.
It doesn't smell too woke to me. They've got some symptoms, but it's not conclusive.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 didn't appear to suffer from any ideological infection so I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt unless further incriminating evidence arises. That was a real good game too, so I'm hoping they haven't fallen.
I mean reading the tweet, nobody said anything about white except OP. Devs seem more disappointed everyone is creating what would seem like a NPC character instead of using the tools given to them
Otoh, I can't be arsed to create too complicated a char when I'm playing an EA game and just testing shit out.
I made a black male Githyanki with full on fro and fro beard and black as ebony skin. I named him "Jogger". I hope my data is useful to Larian.
I'm not digging the story in the game, its hard to play from a boredom perspective. No humor or jokes. The strategic combat is weak as well. Not sure WTF Larian did or how much direction they took from Bioware, but this is feeling like Dragon Age II.
There is no Baldur's Gate 3. There's only yet another cash grab of a franchise that resolved it's story in June 2001 with Throne of Bhaal where the protagonist as the last remaining Bhaalspawn either ascended to Godhood or didn't.
The Ascension mod gives some leeway to Imoen and Balthazaar who willingly give up their Bhaalspawn essence if still alive, but apart from that there is no more story to the Baldur's Gate games other than the cheap and completely detached dungeon grinds that have been released after June 2001.
I've not checked the story but I assume that it will involve the city of Baldur's Gate. And it will most likely not revolve around the Bhaalspawn, although I expect Jahiera to make an appearance but with patriarchy is evil twist so they can screw over fans.
I don't know if they're being upset because people are choosing specifically a white male as their character stand-in. But they clearly do not understand their fan base if they're surprised by this.
Oh, but if I play a non-human, I'm a "damn furry". Fuck you. I'll play a white guy, a white chick (if I want a "me" in the fucking game for some reason) or a furry, why the fuck should I want to play a nigger or a paki?
It doesn't seem to me that the devs are concerned with race or sex necessarily. It's that the average character is the default white male.
However, I'm thinking that there's a problem with their reasoning. It's based on two premises:
When any given user adjusts a slider, there's an equal chance they'll move the slider in either direction.
The closer you get to the end of a slider, the more likely it is that this feature will look weird. This being the case, people tend to stick toward the middle.
Assuming these premises are true, you'd end up with a normal curve for each slider. If so, any large group of characters (even those who look nothing alike) with average out to the center of the sliders.
To be fair, I'm not sure if this is anti-white-male thought, or just hoping for more out there characters, like demons and stuff, like they mention. That said, they should certainly know better; doesn't matter the options, human characters generally and historically win out in RPGs and character creation. Also, it's none of their business anyway.
And is, in fact, kind of creepy that they're keeping track of such things in the first place. Yes, it's a game with multiplayer, and yes, it's in early access, but all these analytics are still creepy. Maybe I'm just old fashioned.
Also, this is how they describe the Human race in one of their other posts:
Human
The most common face to see in Faerûn...
Guys, come on. Think this through, devs...
And, for anyone curious, here is the post complaining about people creating the wrong characters, and here is where they describe Humans, and the other races.
Did I wake up in fucking clown world? What part of this remotely brings up fucking race? It's a dumb silly jab at how the character looks like fucking Nate from Fallout 4.
Jesus christ my brain can't handle this level of stupidity, why are people upvoting this?
The character is a white male and the Dev griping about the character, so the title is still technically accurate, no?
You don't have to downvote it just because you don't like the unsupported inference of the importance of race in the title, the main content is still true. And it's handy to know when some dumbass dev/PR goblin decides to bitch publicly that the majority aren't playing the game how they want, just because their characters aren't neon freakshows.
Its got nothing to do with how the character is a white male, it's a fucking joke about how he looks like a default Fallout protagonist. I can't see it.
My god, everyone bitches about how the left has no sense of humor, but when someone pokes fun at how generic this dude looks suddenly it's like both are just two sides of the same easily offended shit coin.
Its got nothing to do with how the character is a white male
That's just as unfounded an assertion as OP made. All we know is they disliked it enough to make a devpost about it. Sure, you'd like to think it's just a gripe about not getting to show off all the weird exotic stuff in their telemetry fluffpiece. But I'd also like to think they're smart enough to not bitch about the players not treating the exotic options as the default choice. Frankly that's a whole lot more commendable of the playerbase than immediately flooding the world with chaotic good drow rangers and tieflings.
No-one made the Devs choose to showcase the median character build. If they wanted to show off the character creator's chops they could have shown the average choice instead. Mess around with some model scales for half an hour and made an off-white tiefl-orc with chibbi horns, tusks and tail, half a boob and vampirism on every second Tuesday. But no, they chose the median, because that's what they wanted to make a statement about.
Don't they always say representation is important because people want to see themselves on screen? Guess who plays video games? Guess why default characters, such as the vault dweller, used to look like a white male?
Would they be complaining if most people picked up a black character or would they be parading it everywhere and masturbating themselves over it?
I used to think this woke nonsense would blow over. Now I’m not so sure.
It's not just a phase for idiots and weirdos that haven't seen enough of the world yet. It's much more complex than that. It's a way of interpreting the world. This doesn't just fall out of fashion.
It will, the problem is the next wave will involve hammers, sickles, and gulags.
You could always make black rogues and pickpocket non-stop and randomly beat people. We could get Larian talking about how they don't like racist depictions of their characters in their fantasy world.
Not so long ago they were complaining that white people should not be allowed to create black characters because it equals black face.
I do that as well. I want my character to resemble me so I can go on an adventure. But I do understand why some want sexy female characters.
Specially third person games.
If I'm going to spend dozen hours staring at the character's ass I rather it be a female one.
Yes, but also everything else about people, including their gods. So there's that.
Human nature also gave rise to capitalism, philosophy, objectivity and individuality.
Human nature also gives to everything else that opposes it in a positive manner.
Person with a horrificly bright cheap hair dyejob, 80s Magnum PI mustache and prescription tits: "Why are people making their characters look normal? Doesn't everyone secretly want to look like a carnival freak?"
This is my new favorite way to describe the sideshow attractions.
Holy shit yes
Most people don't like playing races other than human in games, probably because they just want a self-insert. And there's nothing wrong with that.
If anything, the real weirdos are people like me who play Qunari or Dwarves because I find humans kind of boring in a fantasy setting.
I think the average dude just go with the default option or barely changes a few things so the character doesn't look grotesque (which is becoming increasingly harder).
DAO had tremendous re-playability, so I did canvas all the choices. I don't trust any other games to handle that in a way that makes it worth my time.
I always played an Exo in Destiny, but they're just skins. And I dropped them forever for being dumbasses and, apparently also racist sickos.
This is why I don't really play triple A western games any more. Most of them seem to have some sort of weird hangup against white and male and I'm not even white. They forget to make how to make fun game in the process of getting woke.
I usually create a version of myself. White males like video games. Why is that so hard to accept?
Honestly, I usually go female in character creators and probably would've picked something weird... were it not for the fact the game immediately asks you afterwards what you're attracted to.
At that point I just thought...'Then I'll go for the stand-in'.
Imagine creating a hot female character and the thirsty soyboy dev who
stealscollects the data start creeping in to your steam DMs lmao.I've seen something before where the genders were inversed and everyone was picking the opposite gender. The male characters you saw were female players.

Human Wizard
Human Rogue
Human and Elf accounted for >40% of characters
Must be work of the gays.
This is why the Sarkeesian types don't count create-a-character games as games with female protags. The vast majority of players just make a regular dude. It doesn't count unless you are being forced to swallow the SJW dick.

The sheer level of historical inaccuracy in Asscreed Odyssey drove me totally nuts and I refuse to touch it.
What is it about game development and the gaming industry in general that attracts so many degenerates? Also is this an actual "knows how to code" developer or just a "community manager" or qa or marketing or some other hanger on?
A combination of liberal arts students and regional location. Plus, it's in every aspect of our society now.
Steam is Sailor Moon?
Lazy, stupid and won't do anything good before a man in a suit shows up?
Yeah sounds about right.
"Social Media", but that's a good one, too.
Probably the later, the former should be working his ass off in to finishing this game instead of posting shit on the forums.
For what it's worth, they're not exactly doubling down on it either.

Oh nice, another game to pirate.
Personally I think I stead of bitching about what cosmetics players picked, they should be thankful gamers picked their game to spend money on.
I don't know if they're being upset because people are choosing specifically a white male as their character stand-in. But they clearly do not understand their fan base if they're surprised by this.

as if anyone gives a fuck how their char looks during a beta ...
how many of the real devs are even working on this

Jesus christ my brain can't handle this level of stupidity, why are people upvoting this?
As a white person, I'm done laughing at jokes about white people. Every other race is off limits. Do you object to equality?
Dude, it's not a joke about how they're white. The only ones making it about race are people like you and OP. Larian doesn't mention the fucking race!

It’s precisely about it being a white make because you damn well know theyd have made some celebratory bullshit if it ended up being a black woman.
