Let me tell you the two reasons why nerds are losers.
The first reason why they are losers is because the word nerd has gone through decay, it no longer means what it used to. It used to mean “Someone who is interested in intellectual pursuits.”, such as math, literature, science, history, etc. Basically, someone who finds the mental classes at school to be interesting, while most others hate those subjects because intellectuality is not for everyone, hence why the word nerd is associated with school.
Nowadays, however, the word nerd basically means “Someone who is a mindless consumer”. Nerds are no longer intelligent, they now only care about pseudo intellectual crap like Rick and Morty, superhero movies, and other things of second hand, childish banality nature.

The second reason why nerds are sucky losers is because they allow their communities to be invaded by cringe normies who would have bullied nerds in the past, but now that being a consumer nerd has become mainstream, these cringe people are invading nerd communities and turning them into leftoid cesspools. Nerd communities are now infested with attention whoring sodomites and “gamer girls” and man children, and nerds do nothing to stop it.

I went to r/dndmenes for the first time in a while, and first post I see, at the top of the page, is not even a meme. It was a screenshot from another subreddit.
The screenshot was a meme about goblins in another subreddit and the guy who was posting the screenshot to r/dndmemes was bitching about how goblins are an “antisemitic stereotype blah blah blah”.

I would know, I grew up a geek. Only reason I didn't get bullied was because I took martial arts as a hobby, and had a nasty left cross. I still spent my younger years being cordial and risk averse, letting people get their way more often than not. It took some hard life experience to beat that softness out of me, and even still, my ingrained response is often to just take it, and I have to remind myself that I shouldn't just have to take it, and can, in fact, tell people to fuck off (politely or otherwise).

I don't quite understand what makes people go in different directions like this. In middle school/highschool there was a group of like 5-6of us who were super nerdy (80s/90s). We had different political beliefs, but we all got along, and we all agreed on a bunch of things too. We had far more in common than in differences. We were tight.
One of the most liberal of the group has because a super MAGA type. I've gone from being libertarianish to being hardcore anti-leftist and anti-libertarian.
Most of the others were kind centrist/liberalish/didn't really care much and they are almost all EXTREMELY leftist now.
The group had naturally dispersed, but we kept in contact. One friend, who I had literally known since elementary school, has ghosted me 100% since I responded to a Facebook post of his about voter ID being racist.
Today, there is no group, and no communication. Even the lefties got in some argument about something and excluded each other. ME and the newly MAGA guy are the only ones who keep on touch at all, so far as I know. Kind of a microcosm of society I guess.

The problem is that their "communities" were never complete. A pathology of nerds (in the classical sense) is that they often, even usually, prioritise those intellectual pursuits to the detriment of everything else. So, yeah, they have these groups focusing on intellectual pursuits at a high level, but they are out of shape, socially awkward if not hostile, hygenically challenged, and often make it a point of pride to be different from "normies".
The means they can't really form communities, because communities need different kinds of people to be able to handle every situation. Nerds can't even procreate amongst themselves because women are largely not interested in intellectuallism.
So nerds were, and are, ecstatic when normies started showing interest in the amazing things they made, not understanding that those same people couldn't give less of a crap about the culture that created them.
And then there's the money aspect. Nerds tend towards wealth as a side effect of their yolked autism. Not having social obligations, they spend that money on their hobbies and companies, picking up on this, cater to the "whales". This subverts the whole system because, while the hobbies were all created for very little money in someone's basement and propagated through paper newsletters or online mailing lists, companies take the creativity out in order to serve the customers their repackaged slop. There would be zero issues with "gatekeeping" stuff like Warhammer, DnD, and MTG if the nerds were still making stuff themselves; instead, they farmed the creative aspects out to companies over which they have no control.
Tl;dr: the nerds are getting what they wanted, except they thought that the normie (and corporate) love of their hobbies would translate to acceptance of them, personally. Which it didn't.

This particular subject is important to the evolving digital landscape regarding many more issues than just nerd "culture" though. It's one of my biggest gripes with the rainbow mafia, for example, that they're working tirelessly to carve out a place for themselves within the strict confines of polite society, despite the very concept of their movement being that they defy categorization. Eventually we're going to have to have a serious discussion about what aspects of humanity are appropriate to include within shared social spaces, and what ought to be left private, but that can't happen while everyone and their mother is attempting to codify their entire existence digitally.

The thing that changed is that a woman used to have to take a hit to their social standing to take that position. There were always 2 kinds of nerds. The nerds who were just nerds because they were too smart to be normal. And therefore ended up as an outcast. And the nerds who were not normal, who were outcasts simply because they were seen as losers. This is why back in the day, calling someone a "nerd" was an insult. The smart ones over time, improved the image of nerds but the smart ones were always just the best of the nerds.
