2013 was the last decent Microsoft Office. And Windows 8.1 was the last decent Windows (and if you can get the drivers for the SD card reader of the Chromebook you are using you can install it on an SD card to multiboot the Chromebook using Mr. Chromebox, but you can also just install it directly on the Chromebook internal storage, however the latter will overwrite all of the internal storage including the ChromeOS installation. Some Chromebook models can do the former with Windows 10 without additional drivers, but other models will require additional drivers as well).
hahaha well a lot of stuff for even WinXP runs natively on Win8.1 and this was the revision after the initial backlash (like WinMe which the initial release was trash and needed several registry tweaks and 3rd party QOL applications to function reasonably). 8.1 is mostly fine - far better than Win8 - and some programs released after Win8.1 don't run on Win7 but mostly previous WinNT based programs run on it just fine (though some require configuration tweaks or 3rd party patches).
Basically, 10 was the last usable Windows, 8.1 was the last acceptable and required for some programs but also mostly completely compatible with all WinNT programs, and Win98SE was best for Win9x and real-time mode DOS.
But also all the ALI for modern Linux kinda makes anything prior to Win10 moot since you most likely could run it in Linux with the appropriate system applicatiuons.
WinME coud be used with a LOT of tweaks. I used it for the advanced features it introduced, but setting it up was ridiculous so you needed to have a drive image if you ever wanted to reinstall because screw that process. I ran WinXP well into Vista and even Win7 because by that time I was just using LMDE with a WinXP VM.
Sadly they are just complying with corpocult demands. There’s more effort put into compliance than innovation in the overwhelming majority of American companies.
Keeping downgraded seems to be safer than anything Microslop is pushing out. The last three updates to Windows 11 were filled with security flaws and broken processes. Hell, the last update broke fucking Notepad!
Does anything compete with microsoft excel for spreadsheet software, visual basic, custom functions, batch scripting, linking external data sources, etc?
excel is my favorite office program. I even make my memes inside excel
Trading one demon for another, but Google Sheets is basically interchangeable for most "common" applications of Excel. When you want an omni-tool instead of several dedicated specific tools, you usually need to submit yourself to some type of evil contract.
Libre office can do all of that. It is a little rougher around the edges, but In use it for work and find it completely fine. Telling big tech to fuck off does cost a little extra effort, but well worth it imo.
I used to make the joke that Microsoft was a Nazi company because they let you write kike and nigger (parody of the claims that reddit alternatives and twitter were Nazi sites for the same reason) but never really considered the idea that Microsoft really would censor these words. Give it a few years.
Let's check out the development team of LibreOffice as well. I still explicitly remember one one of the long time developers of PHP publicly quit over SJWs and the CoC.
I once saw a Chinese coworker lose his shit in a meeting over a slide mentioning some of our business operations in “China and Taiwan”, since “China already includes Taiwan”. Guess he’ll be a fan of this.
It’s funny you say that, because I had another coworker, Korean guy from California, pretty based, and he used to love to speculate on which of our Chinese coworkers were spies. He was like, we have a couple hundred Chinese nationals working for us. Statistically it’s pretty likely that a couple of them are spies.
Anyway, that Chinese guy was probably #1 on his list. Couldn’t hide his loyalty to Grorious Zhongguo.
Mix of stuff. Some of it is reasonable like flagging defunct names like Czechoslovakia or "old" spellings of foreign words. But no shortage of woke things like being offended by the word "orient."
The "inclusiveness" tab is 100% bullshit obviously. But you can turn any of these off. Unless corporate group policy forces them on, probably.
Linux has been a completely viable home user desktop OS for over 15 years. LMDE was my tipping point. I just ran a Win7 VM for applications not functioning through WINE ALI.

If all you need is an internet browser and basic open office stuff, sure. The minute you step into trying to make it a gaming rig you start hitting walls fast. I was given this same line twenty years ago and it's as false now as it was back then. Linux is an operating system for autistic savants and people who don't value their free time, it is not a replacement for the Windows operating system and I don't think it ever will be.
nope. Several ALI work perfectly for many games including modern releases. WINE has worked fine for many Windows programs for over a decade. Proton is one of the best ALI for games. If you want gaming compatibility, then try SteamOS.
So aside from running Windows programs just fine, there also are a multitude of alternatives to Windows specific programs for various tasks, and many programs which have native Linux releases.
I've heard this song and dance before and it's always bullshit. There is inevitably going to be some four hour to two week troubleshooting process to get something running on Linux that just installs within minutes on Windows. Until a die-hard Linux hater can vouch for it and explain what galaxy brained breakthrough has occurred within the last twenty years that fundamentally changed absolutely everything about Linux, I'm not going to believe this is anything other than fanboyism like it has been literally every single time I've encountered it previously.
This was added several years ago. You can still manage these settings and turn them off. You should do it anyway without political guidance because you shouldn't let it dictate your speech as it will change you tone.
My Office 2007 still works just fine.
Libreoffice killing it still.
Shiiiiit, I'm over here using Abiword because Libreoffice is too slow and bloated
I'd say notepad.exe but Microsoft managed to bungle even that.
I need to look into pirating an older version of Office. All I get from 2016 is telemetry and missing functions in Excel.
I have found ISOs of defunct Microsoft products on archive.org, including minified AIO fully updated Win8.1.

That's a funny way to spell Windows 7.

WinMe was the last non-protected-mode Windows. Win2k was built on Windows NT and was rock solid.
WinMe was garbage.

They are the corpocult bro.
Microsoft is an Indian company now.
This is old news. They've been at this for years. I'm gonna have to upgrade to an older version to get rid of this crap.
Keeping downgraded seems to be safer than anything Microslop is pushing out. The last three updates to Windows 11 were filled with security flaws and broken processes. Hell, the last update broke fucking Notepad!
2013, and LibreOffice supports most VB functionality as well as supporting python.

LibreOffice Calc and Math

Just switch to libre office. It works fine.
Its a matter of time until they don't let you use word or write text at all.
Copilot will do it for you lol

i bet if they could get away with it typing "pajeet" would have the ai lock your system
There was never any reason to upgrade past word 2007.
2013 but yeah. Haven't used it since LibreOffice started properly supporting VB macros. Plus you get python.
Let's check out the development team of LibreOffice as well. I still explicitly remember one one of the long time developers of PHP publicly quit over SJWs and the CoC.
He should have quit for creating PHP.
hahaha I still remember doing WordPress contract sites in both 4 and 5 once they added namespaces because some hosts only supported one or the other

Look him right in the eye and nod. Say "The filthy communist rebels in West Taiwan will be subdued and brought to justice."
Haha, I wish I were quick enough on my feet to think of a reply like that
Sounds like someone who is definitely loyal to the USA and could be fully trusted with sensitive IP and/or export-controlled information.

Linux is for servers, not desktops.
What are you even using? What applications? For a basic home user and even many gamers (because modern games suck) it is perfectly viable.
i block microsoft office from the network. it's constantly trying to "phone home" and i constantly deny it at firewall.
This was added several years ago. You can still manage these settings and turn them off. You should do it anyway without political guidance because you shouldn't let it dictate your speech as it will change you tone.
Anyone who's still using MS Office over LibreOffice clearly isn't in their right mind.
I'm so glad my computer only came with an offer for one year of Microsoft Office softwares.
I never installed that, and jumped straight to LibreOffice.
Windows 11 has been so annoying these past years I really want to get rid of it.
Next computer will be Linux ( probably Bazzite ) and use the old one if I must use Windows for something.
Been that way for a while.
Just use jewgle docs
