Does anything compete with microsoft excel for spreadsheet software, visual basic, custom functions, batch scripting, linking external data sources, etc?
excel is my favorite office program. I even make my memes inside excel
Trading one demon for another, but Google Sheets is basically interchangeable for most "common" applications of Excel. When you want an omni-tool instead of several dedicated specific tools, you usually need to submit yourself to some type of evil contract.
Libre office can do all of that. It is a little rougher around the edges, but In use it for work and find it completely fine. Telling big tech to fuck off does cost a little extra effort, but well worth it imo.
2013, and LibreOffice supports most VB functionality as well as supporting python.
