Spiderman 2 was a cocky loner who held himself back from doing anything but was obsessed with a government conspiracy that murdered his parents and stole from labs to help himself out on his revenge plots while he fights against people whose genetic deformities drive them to do terrible things.
Spiderman 3 is a genius child who is super into movies and films that are owned by Disney and is bestowed the title of the new king of the Avengers as well as all of the Avengers cast aside villains.
Besides the same name and a similar looking costume, the three Spidermen are completely different characters. Except of course because they're all generally White, they're totally the same...

Honestly, though, if you haven't read the comics, they are even BETTER than the first game (in parts), which is... Quite something, given that I think that is my favourite game that I have ever played. Legacy is great, too. Also Thrawn, the Great Hyperspace War, and a couple of other series I can't remember... Mara Jade, too! Who Disney seems to have sadly erased from canon... :-/
Star Wars (under Dark Horse, at least) is somewhat odd, in that I would argue that the comics, some of the games, and indeed some of the novels, are better than most of the movies...

I'd also love more Defoe too but that's asking for too much, I just feel like his barely restrained batshit insanity was the perfect blend with Raimi's horror-comedy background, shame that movie had to spend half of its runtime on establishing the setting and the characters and the powers and shooting Ben because every scene with the Goblin was pure cheesy gold.
