I live in a rural area where all the women between 18 and 30 are remarkably, almost puzzlingly attractive, whereas most of them over 40 are hideous trolls. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. Youth alone does not even come close to explaining the difference.
What I was observing is the effects of alcoholism, smoking, 3 daily Big Macs, and zero exercise has on a person. They are genetically blessed with good looks, but they've destroyed their bodies with vice. The younger girls don't smoke, they exercise, and as far as I can tell they keep it to a mimosa or two on weekends. Their mothers, on the other hand, guzzle beer and diet soda all day while rarely standing up, much less exercising.
I think the average person is fairly attractive. We just live in a culture that celebrates self-destructive behavior so we rarely see people who retained their natural beauty.
