Shocking to see just how much damage a single Gov has done to Canadian businesses from media to oil & gas to air transportation & tourism. Is the objective to have all Canadians dependent on public sector jobs?

Yes.

It's amazing how so few people don't understand that's what leftism is. Hell, a significant portion of leftists don't even understand that.

Most leftists think that it's about being Katniss "Skywalker" Potter #resisting the fascist Republican Nazi KKK empire. They're useful idiots on a good day, regular idiots the rest.

The irony being that most of those media icons are more in line with anti-statist right wing individualism than they are of totalitarian collectivism. But they don't understand actual political stances, so there's no surprise there. All they understand is "Good vs Evil" and the MSM calls the right evil, so they need to be good and the left aren't the right, so they must be left-wing, right?

It's immature "reasoning" to a fault.

Critic: Google is stealing

Me: If linking to news is stealing, you must be very pleased that they have promised to stop

Critic: No I wish for them to continue stealing as much as they can but now be required to pay me a handsome fee as compensation for this outrageous theft

It's a can't live with them, can't live without them situation.

Google shows a detailed summary that 95% of people only read, so Canadian news companies miss out on the lion's share of ad revenue. But without Google doing this they miss out on the 5% that click through.

Google is the predator here. In a just world, Google would give the news companies a share of the search revenue (like Bing does with Microsoft Rewards).

The real unfortunate thing here is the bill is absolute dogshit that Google must "ensure a significant portion of Indigenous news outlets benefit" and that "two of more journalists" constitutes a news organization (ie husband and wife bloggers are a news organization) and so on.

Stupid law notwithstanding I don't have a problem with this. How would you define a news organization? I'm actually surprised they didn't go with "Anyone the CBC and Trudeau agree deserve the title."

Some kind of minimum reach. More than 10,000 views a year or something like that.

As it is, Google has to negotiate a legal contract with you because you post once a year about your neighbor leaving his trash cans out too long? That's a welfare program for lawyers.

This only applies to Google/Facebook because has a cutoff over how much market share companies have so that it's not onerous on small upstart competitors, same principle should apply on the other end as well.

On the one hand, I don't like corporations trying to tell governments what they can and can't do...on the other hand, fuck censorious authoritarian regimes like Canada.

Google and Meta are doing the right thing in this specific case. Canada wanting people to pay for links is retarded, and can fuck right off. Castro jr needs to fucking go, so do the rest of the shitlibs up there (but that'll never happen).

That said, fuck google and meta still.

Exactly. Fuck them, even though they are entirely in the right in this scenario.

I'm still trying to figure out if this outcome was what the Liberals were aiming for all along, or if they are really that fucking stupid that they thought these companies would pay out for news links.

To an extent it was. They're hoping that people inside Canada will instead go directly to news sites for their news, and most people still predominantly consume news from MSM outlets which are all now financially beholden to the government. So the hope is that the end result of this will be people consuming only the establishment narrative from the CBC, CTV, Global, etc. websites when they might otherwise have Googled the topic they wanted news about and inadvertently seen an unsanctioned opinion or perhaps some information the MSM were being careful to leave out of their coverage.
