PlayStation support has confirmed that a new digital rights management policy for the console is intentional, not a glitch. Starting with any digital games purchased after the March 2026 system update, your PS5 will require an internet connection at least once every 30 days to validate (twitter.com)

If buying it doesn't mean I own it then me pirating it doesn't mean I stole it.

Usually not right away, but inevitably the console is emulated on PC or someone figures out how to jailbreak the console.

pirating it doesn't mean I stole it.

Never did. Not theft, not even larceny, just infringement on a statute granted right. If you don't cause a minimum amount of damages per year, it isn't even a crime, just a tort.

Don't all the people who get in trouble for video game piracy get busted for selling access to it? I know some Switch emulation dude got in big trouble for doing that exact thing.

They tend to go after distributors whether they're charging or not, although charging for it would probably be an aggravating circumstance. They could technically go after end users as well and occasionally they do but it's just not worth it for the most part. It's similar to Microslop looking the other way when consumers pirate their jeetware but going scorched earth on any business that tries it with their enterprise edition.

I guess they could go after regular shmucks, but I feel a lot of piracy cases are for old games that you can’t buy first hand anymore and haven’t for years. Feels like a lot of companies are missing out on easy revenue vs having people hunt down old consoles while the companies don’t see a single cent.

some of the old games had limited licensing for specific systems and it's not worth the effort to renegotiate or the right owners disappeared after they went out of business, some the companies themselves lost the original source codes and assets. Nintendo and Sony and other major game companies sure aren't shy about selling you same 30-40 years old games on every platform for the games they own or still have rights to.

Though only after emulation proved people still liked to play them in the 2000s.

Not video games but with MP3s the (((record companies))) argued that pirating violated the commercial rights for a song, costing something like $100k per song per download.

If video game companies are going to take away the digital products we paid for after a certain amount of time has passed, then it gives me all the more reason to pirate and save video games to my external hard drives so I can play them offline at any time without ever needing to connect to their online services to verify ownership.

Yea, there has been lots of this sort of crap going around. Last week Amazon decided to brick perfectly good older model Kindle readers for no real reason at all. They won't be able to connect to Amazon anymore, so if you have one, you need to jailbreak it. I have at least two of the affected models, a first gen Kindle Fire and a Kindle 4, and I am NOT happy.

that's why you don't even for a single second after buying you take them off airplane mode, let alone enter a wifi password.

just use calibre and pirate everything. annas archive is the goto nowadays.

edit. also install de-drm plugin so you can grab ebooks from your library etc.

Is calibre a ebook reader or search/downloader?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 7 ▼
– enevold 7 points 56 days ago +7 / -0

a library management software that reads and converts basically anything. if you use the de-drm stuff you can lend out ebooks from a library, remove it, keep it, should there be stuff you can't find with other means.

pro-tip: convert into amazons format and set the converter up to remove font-css. then you can also install and use custom-fonts on your kindle. works on both my kindle4 and paperlight or whatever the newer one is called.

Well they just lost any hope of capturing deployed US servicemen. Not sure how big an influence that is, but it certainly won't do them any favors.

This decision smacks of retarded bean counters and more retarded management. They think they have a captive audience that just has to bend over and take it, but they will find out that perpetually antagonizing your customer base isn't a viable strategy in the long run.

It's bigger than I think people realize. It's essentially what started this death spiral for Xbox. Don Mattrick telling Geoff Keighley that U.S. servicemen can buy an 360 if they don't have an internet connection (that and Sony putting out the "how to share games on the PS4" video).

We’re like 6 years into its lifecycle and it still feels like there are no actual games for the fucking thing. Nothing but nigs and lesbians on every game cover, no hook, everything corpo-sanitized.

It’s bad how we’ll walk through a store and my kids browse the shelves with mild disinterest because they genuinely don’t care for anything past the PS3 Gen. Jesus, when I was 12 walking around a store and perusing shelves of PlayStation games was the most exciting thing imaginable in and of itself.

Never bothered with the PS5 and, yep, I agree with you 100%. WTF are we missing out on anyway, lol

There aren't, I say this as someone gifted a PS5, it has absolute no worthwhile console exclusives, even Demon's Souls remake (probably the only reason to ever buy a PS5) is an inferior version of the original in everyway. Probably the best exclusive is Returnal and even that's hard to get into because the main character is a geriatric boomer, the only saving grace with that game is that it's all a hallucination for some trauma or some gay shit.

Jesus...It still feels like it's a brand new console that's still waiting for the Christmas line up to launch and bolster it's roster for the holiday season, but no it's actually been out that long and is still a ghost town? Shit, what are they even doing...

I've been boycotting Sony for over 20 years. Not a single Sony product in my house save some Blu-ray discs and a player that I got given to me after a neighbor died and I mowed his lawn for a couple of months while the family (who lived out of state) dealt with probate. That's for ads. I have bemoaned the way games that allow you to pay to get rid of ads still try to put the ads on your device. They should just create two versions of a game. And, if you pay to get rid of ads, you switch to the version that doesn't need that.

I have screamed at my phone because the ad blocker keeps all ads off my device. The stupid game I was playing says no internet connection but, it's my phone. I can see the bars. I can go online. The game ised to have temper tantrums that it can't download ads, even though I already paid to her rid of ads.

It's fucking obnoxious. Sony makes so many stupid choices it's amazing they make any good products.

This stupid game I play cost $70 to get rid of the ads forever before they took away that option. Luckily for me my Dad paid for most of it. It was seriously pissing me off. Which he found very funny, but decided to give me the gift of not being so angry. Now I read people complain that they've paid much more than the $70 because it went subscription model.

Why would you even have a console for anything else.

What if I told you that entire generations of gamers grew up spending thousands of hours in their bedroom or family den on Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog LONG before the internet or ANY of the always-online digital gulags were ever built?

What if some of those gamers grew up and had kids of their own, and now just want their little ones to share in the same kind of wholesome fun and happiness without having to always connect to the Information-Super Highway toilet pipe full of pajeets, groomers and pedos?

Get any media computer and put Steam or Bazzite on it.

What's next on your complaint list, your VCR doesn't have HDMI output? "But my kids can't have the exact same childhood I did without a VCR in the living room"

You still get a newspaper delivered to your house I'd guess. "Back in my day we'd get newspaper print on our hands and we liked it."

Some of my best memories from college were when we had four or five of us crammed into one guy's bedroom in the dorms with all the bed frames cleared off and set up a Diablo 2 LAN game. We all ran skelemancers except for my one friend who ran an Enchantress build so we actually had the necessary damage output. We rolled through all three difficulties without much trouble, but the best part was definitely shouting at each other for a town portal every two minutes because we were too lazy to walk anywhere that didn't involve picking up all of the loot in our wake.

Kids today will never know that joy because they never had a culture of couch based multiplayer that leads to the idea of all cramming into one room for what would otherwise be an online game with everyone sequestered away in their homes, isolated and alone. It's a genuine societal level problem, this breakdown in basic human socialization. But sure, we should just all get on XBox Live or Discord and pretend it's a real equivalent to actually sitting down and playing with your friends all in the same room.
