I imagine a lot of you are probably familiar with Metatron, but if you aren't he's been on youtube for almost a decade now, making primarily very detailed and well-researched historical videos. Almost 750k subs, and over 800 videos during that time.
Couple days ago, Youtube decided to fully remove all monetization from his channel (his (extremely naive IMO) video on this is here).
Personally, I think it is obvious why this happened. Two weeks ago, he made this video pointing out that the ancient Greeks were, in fact, not actually pro-gay which got over 1 million views. And a week ago he made this other video talking about how the black Cleopatra thing was rubbish and that there were better choices to pick from if they wanted black warrior queens which got over 500k views.
And then his channel suddenly just loses all monetization? Such a strange coincidence!
Honestly, I wish they'd do this to more people. The only way YouTube will ever have a viable competitor as if they push people with large audiences on to another platform who bring their viewers with them.
I agree, but normies are stupid.
"I don't want to move to [alternative site here] because it's full of NAZIs!"
Well, yeah, obviously, because they were the first to get pushed off the platform and had to find (or create) the viable alternatives first.
It's like arresting skateboarders for riding in public then complaining there are too many skateboarders at the skate park they built.
I think it's more like,
"I don't want to move to <alternative site> because I'm a weak and lazy creature of habit and uncomfortable with change, plus I don't really care if someone I agree with gets booted from Youtube so long as I can still watch stuff."
I'm not sure that is the reason. It wouldn't help if Nazi content is proactively served to normies, but more important is the network effect and the fact that the tech of these other sites isn't as good as that of Youtube (for good reason). And people don't juggle various sites, they pick one. Even I don't go to Rumble unless I know exactly what I want to watch (e.g. GG's show).
Even if many creators move to Rumble, Youtube will still have orders of magnitude more creators that they - and we - like.
It's far more about being lazy than stupid.
There's far too much inertia. It's similar to Twitch. Other streaming sites are offering better experiences, but Twitch is still #1 because people refuse to move.
The problem is the other sites just don't have enough money to pay creators. Most ad sponsers won't associate with them and it just isn't financially practical to pay for every creator I like to watch.
I'm not disagreeing with you, but if YouTube demonetizes your videos, you're not getting paid either.
I'm sure there's still some value to posting on YouTube because you get a larger audience and you can pitch for donations or direct viewers to the mirrored copy of your video on another site where you do get revenue, but I wouldn't count on YouTube allowing that forever- I'm surprised they tolerate people pitching other sites in their videos; perhaps they just can't catch it unless somebody reports it.
YouTube makes money from advertisers because of their content. If they're not willing to share that money with the content creators the creators need to go somewhere that does.
That's not really true though. Rumble pays Russell Brand millions and offered Joe Rogan an obscene contract. The problem is that viewers stick with their regular, favourite sites and don't feel a need to move because doing so feels like an unnecessary sacrifice. They're comfortable with the familiar and aren't convinced a change should be made, and even often get defensive if you bring it up.
No doubt in an attempt to bootstrap their platform. Often, big creators get sweetheart deals and smaller ones get nothing.
That's why the winning move would be to pay 1,000 small/medium channels the same amount you would've paid the one big one to change over. It costs you the same, but with a thousand people making content, you've got an actual reason not just to come over, but to stay.
True. Well, all you have to do is give them a better rate than YT. You can try to sell ads just like google does. I dunno how hard that is going to be for a competitor to get advertisers. Google used to have a virtual monopoly on the ad business.
The economy of YT is not straight forward, from my perspective. I point that out because I dunno if these huge streamers are loss leaders for them or they make huge profit off. Money comes back into the ecosystem by channels paying for ads -- the very thing that gets them impressions that gets them paid. I have wondered if the entire thing is a multi-level marketing scheme like OF where the primary profits are being provided by the suckers paying for placement/ads.
It's working with Rumble. Ramzpaul has a great model where he starts his shows on YouTube, keeps things as kosher as possible for the first half, and then tells everyone to head over to Rumble for the 2nd half where he cuts loose. But he uploads the both halves of the show to Rumble, so it encourages people to just start the show on Rumble rather than switch in the middle.
Metatron made an Odysee, at least: https://odysee.com/@Metatronyt:5
Weird how coincidences happen in only one direction.
Meanwhile after my latest cookie flush, YouTube recommendations immediately had a bunch of lib channels spreading misinformation that Trump was convicted of rape.
I remember Overly Sarcastic Production getting super mad about the "erasure" of Achilles and Patroclus's gay relationship in the Brad Pitt movie, Troy. The movie portrayed exactly as much gay relationship between them as the Iliad, zero. The fact gays can't seem to differentiate between philia and eros says more about them than society.
It's stupid to get mad about it, but opinions were divided on that one even in ancient times, so it's less stupid than some of their other claims (e.g. calling Plato a homosexual).
Close to all of the 'homosexuals' in ancient times were aristocrats engaging in degeneracy as the wealthy and powerful often do, and basically none of them were exclusively homosexual.
What's more, it was a "love" of grown men for beardless boys, so pedophilia because if Greece is anything like other Mediterranean countries, your beard starts growing in your early teens.
Zeus and Ganymede… the thing most people don’t get is it was always pederasty/ pedophilic and I don’t for one second pretend the “gays” promoting it as something normal believed it was two grown adults fucking.
Right well pederasty was considered somewhat acceptable, at least in context, and two grown adult men was not. At the very least, it would hurt the social standing of those engaged in it.
You may as well just say they were a patriarchal, traditional het society that tolerated a bit of pederasty.
it really goes to show just how oblivious even the average "tech using" person is to the woke mafia.
Mind-boggling how obtuse most of the population remains all the time.
Dang. I’ll have to see if he is on Rumble. I’ve been following him for a while
Don't think he's looked into alt-tech platforms yet, as he said he's hopeful Youtube will restore monetization - he seems to be thinking it may have just been a mistake, hence why I said his video was probably naive.
To be fair, as of yesterday it was restored. We will see what he does in the future though now knowing YouTube will be gunning for him.
If he was so quick to think it was purely a mistake, I'm not hopeful that he will take any steps to hedge against future shenanigans. But I don't know this dude at all so who knows.
Where are you getting that it was restored?
I don't necessarily agree that he was being naive (even if he wasn't being naive, it would be good strategy to pretend to think that it was just a mistake), but Youtube reversing itself after an outcry does not necessarily establish that it was a mistake. We simply don't know. Youtube is about as transparent as the Angkar.
He announced it on the community page of his channel yesterday.
I also don’t believe it was a mistake. Just that on this issue the PTB at YouTube decided this was a poor hill to die on since even other Leftist were upset by the raceswapped Cleopatra.
That vid was posted like 4 months ago (though the post seems to be deleted or something): https://kotakuinaction2.win/p/16ZqUH0IXS/the-ancient-greeks-were-not-gay/c/
Edit: it was a different vid
Huh. On Youtube, it says the video went up April 29th. Maybe it got taken down and reuploaded or something, or the video in the 4-month old thread was from another source?
I remember seeing this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNAT4ybsz_E
I think linked from kia2
You're right, I just remembered I saved the vid from the deleted post and it is in fact the one you linked there. Hoarding W
I don't see a video from him for like a month?
Yeah, I was confused about all the Metatron talk over the last few days because I knew I saw a video about the same topic before but it was different and I've never heard of Metatron. u/KeeperOfTheGate has the link that was in that post.
Who are we talking about? OP why is this a link to itself?
Since youtube restored monetization I'm guessing this was just a warning shot.
Now we'll see if he stays true to his morals or knuckles under and supports "the message".
Considering his first video back was further shitting on Black Cleopatra…
Alternatives like Rumble need to improve enough for a people to search for guys like this.
So far, the people that have the most traction are people that built their audiences on YouTube and got them to follow, it's why it's mostly political commentary on there. You don't see the historical or entertainment content to the level you get on YouTube yet.
Honestly all the good gun channels are moving over because they aren’t restricted on what they can talk about
Yeah the search function on rumble is AIDS. Desperately needs to improve in order to get more normies to stick around.
Odysee is better than Rumble
Agreed. Here's Metatron's Odysee: https://odysee.com/@Metatronyt:5
HERstory has been rewritten for your protection, comrade. To quote the Old Text is forbidden.
Youtube should continue to push people off their platform.
This will just make them less and less relevant.
One of the competitors will happily have them.
Never heard of em. But this is typical for janktube
I would take down EVERYTHING in retaliation and link to a new rumble account with reuploads.
OP what is the news here? Searching the title brings up no one who looks to be interesting.
Ed: This is fucked up on .win side. When logged in in my main browser, I can't see this post's text. When I opened it in a different browser and VPN I can see it.
Sounds from the edit like you got it sorted out, but short version is the historical youtuber Metatron got all his monetization stripped (though, from some of the comments it may be fixed for now anyway)
Yeah, you have to change the display mode of "thread" in settings. Or else the text just doesn't appear.
