While I wouldn't say that is strictly true - Boris Yeltzin famously lost his faith in communism when he visited an average American grocery store and saw what the Party had denied the Russian people - any Westerner who calls themselves a communist does so in wilful contempt of the evidence.

Because all their various ideologies hinge on the fact that you can kill enough bad people to reach Nirvana, and that bad people are irredeemable. So killing is not only justified, but a good thing for the world.

The issue they can't accept is human nature. Communism on paper is awesome, but the overreach needed to maintain it is always inevitably corrupted and abused. Every Time. Capitalism sucks too, but it at least puts the powers at be in a constant bid for it which essentially keeps it from cascading to a point where it murders a nation. Communism just sort of gives one person the keys and asks them nicely not to take it for a joy ride. Which is like really ironic.
