Got it recommended by a normie, so I am suspicious. Especially since it is Nickelodeon, but it is also from 2005-2008, so maybe it is not woke. Still can be shit though, which is why I am asking.

It is awesome. No woke garbage at all from what I remember. Its sequel, Legend of Korra, is big 2012 era tumblr energy. Best avoided.
And don't let them gaslight you into thinking Toph is woke because she's disabled and powerful.
She never referred to herself as "disabled."
She never bitched about "ableism."
She never bitched about "fire-centrism."
She never bitched about "feminism."
She called Aang "Twinkletoes" and constantly gave him crap for being girly.
She never asked for gibs.
She eventually became a single mother but never bitched about her ex. Just said "it didn't work out."
Still didn't ask for gibs.
She ends up living alone in a swamp taking care of all her own shit and not bothering anyone else.
She doesn't give Korra a pussy-pass and treats her like she's always treated everyone.
As a disabled man, Toph is an inspiration.
Great post, but I don't know what you're on about after that whole "gibs" bit. You start talking gibberish about some stuff that's clearly not canon. At all.
I don't like what they did with her in Korra either, but it happened.
I wish she had a happier fate and a loving husband. Seriously.
I refuse to accept cultural vandalism just because it was signed by the creators. And you shouldn't either.
Canonically, Toph's hygiene is hikikomori levels of bad. That could just be because she's 12 years old during Avatar, but her nasty-ass feet are integral to both her personality and her abilities as a bender, so it's not a stretch to assume that the dirty weirdo would grow up to be a dirty weirdo. I love Toph, but a hermit is exactly the kind of future I envision for someone like her.
I'm just talking about Korra in general.
Not gonna argue there. But of all the complete bullshit in that series, Toph's life is probably the one thing they got right.
Oh, and the fact that Korra's the avatar and we've gotta deal with it. Been dealing with that for ten years now.
ATLA had some proto-woke stuff, mostly delivered through Katara, but the show is well written enough that it doesn't bother me.
At least with Katara, it was believable and in character, rather than forced. Since if we are being honest, a lot of the hate for Woke stuff starts with it being forced.
Plus she was balanced out by Toph existing, so there is that too.
I'm willing to forgive most of the show's gurl power bullcrap when they make it a point to actually have equality instead of just harping on the guys. Awesome heroes and villains of both sexes who all get time to shine. And instead of making Sokka constantly wrong compared to Katara, they balance each other out and have pros and cons depending on the situation.
If the show was made today Sokka would get the Marvel treatment. He is the comic relief, sure but he has his amazing moments, he's also the smart guy with a plan for things. Today he would be a laughing stock and be made fun off, overshadowed by stronk wymynx.
Thanks, sounds good for this one.
Yeah it's a pretty good show from what I've seen. Definitely not the sequel series Korra though, that's awful when it comes to subversive stuff.
Thanks, sounds good for this one.
There were some episodes and themes that would probably make it extreme for small children (in like the 3rd episode, you see a mass pile of skeletons from a massacred temple, and war is a central theme).
But for older children? Highly recommended. The female characters are able to be strong without giving up being feminine, almost all characters are competent (even the comic relief guy has plenty of moments where he gets serious), the villains have reasonable and understandable motives, many villains get redemption through their actions, etc.
There is a reason that even almost 10 years later, it is considered one of the most popular shows of a generation.
Thanks, sounds good for this one. That scene sounds a bit iffy, but unless there are a lot of similar stuff it is probably OK.
I would definitely recommend looking into episodes then, if you are worried about that. There are a few instances of death shown, but they try to leave it as "implied" as possible. IE: they blow up a mountain that is being climbed by tanks with cables, and after the massive explosion you see the cables dangling in the wind. What happened to the tanks? Dont think about it too much.
Some of the spiritual monsters that can appear in the show can also be a little on the extreme side. Probably one of the ones I remember as standing out the most is "Koh, the Face Stealer", which is a centipede-esque eldritch monstrosity that rapidly changes its faces, with said faces being stolen from anyone who shows emotions around it.
I'd just do Samurai Jack instead. Much better and still kid friendly.
Both are absolutely top tier shows. Samurai Jack has some of the best direction you will see in any animated program and is a work of art.
No need to choose between the two. Watch both.
Need to amend my comment because I should mention to skip the final season of Samurai Jack, at least for now. It came out many years later and aired on Adult Swim because it has more 'mature content' like actually bloody fights, language, and more.
Personally I didn't like the tone shift so I consider it separate from the original seasons.
That one looks like it is for older kids, if any.
It's 'action' but quite tame. I wouldn't go under 6 or 7 years old but beyond that should be acceptable for 8+.
Samurai Jack indeed has some very good episodes, as well as some really pretty animation, but overall the show is mostly just violence porn.
A very good episode I recommend all kids watch is Episode XLII: Samurai versus Samurai. That episode has some great lessons on respect, humility, and posing.
I disagree, it is an 'action' show but not violent.
Zero blood in the entire thing, usually only robots getting attacked. A lot different from Avatar and other cartoons.
There was zero blood because the censors demanded it for the target audience. blood was replaced with oil, limbs were replaced with parts, but it still very much a hack and slash fest. My main issue rewatching it as an adult was that almost every episode was an excuse to get to the fight scene. The quality and substance of the writing varied from episode to episode, but it got so predictable that I am not surprised that it got canceled.
I mean yeah it is a kids show, they have short attention spans and like seeing flashing colors and movement.
If there weren't so many fights kids wouldn't really like it, and yeah they made it censored for kids so it isn't a problem to show to pre-teens.
I mean you kind of want kids shows to be predictable, that is the audience they made it for.
Based children’s kids show reviewer here.
Avatar is fine. There is talk of death but it’s nothing a 5 year old can’t handle.
Legend of Kora immediately jumps into tween romance nonsense. My kids did not like it at all.
Thanks for the info! Any other recommendations for 7-9 year olds?
Gravity Falls.
My little pony(literally has anti communism episodes). Only the original series is good though.
SpongeBob is safe.
Sailor moon crystal. Card captor Sakura. Little witch academia. Hilda isn’t too bad.
Thanks, sounds good.
ATLA is one of the very few shows that I would weather have watched it than do some big activity. Like the first time I saw it I was amazed at it's awesomeness and had to go somewhere with my family. I honestly can't remember what it was we did, but I remember that I had to miss the show.
There is a story arch in it that the creators don't even realize happened. Two of the major characters are in a matriarchal society, and it's them dealing with new cultures that don't follow their ways. The girl was basically a leader in her tribe even though she was 12 and has a hard time when people tell her no, or don't do as she says. She also thinks less of men a lot.
Her older brother is the only teenage boy in their entire tribe, and is trying to find his usefulness in a very sexist world. It takes a lot for him to become his full self, and then does amazing things. He doesn't have powers, just brains and the will to become the best. He literally learns engineering, masters military tactics with that engineering, and then plans out a full attack multiple times on enemies. His younger sister still has a hard time accepting him as the man he is, because she still thinks of him as men are children.
The creators thought they made a feminist, and didn't realize what was actually shown.
It's an absolutely amazing show, and has made me cry several times. Go see it.
This reads like it is worth drawing attention to it. Thanks, sounds good.
Thanks, sounds good.
I wasn't a fan but plenty of people I respect were. It's a relic of a time when kid shows weren't groomer propaganda.
That is the kind of stuff I am trying to gift / recommend to kids in my extended family.
Good, but it was always intended as a slippery slope towards globalist rhetoric, though when they do achieve it they present problems with it that never actually get solved by later protagonists (Legend of Korra) which I guess backfired.
Thanks!
The animated TV show is. The live-action movie is horrible for everyone.
YES. I bought my son the bluray box set of all seasons
Thanks, sounds good.
Yes, it is a very high-tier young adult show. absolutely worth it for any kids who are old enough to handle fantasy violence and some dark themes.
A lot of people here are ragging on Legend of Korra, but I thought that show was fine. The villains were written pretty well, and the main character does grow a bunch over the course of the four seasons. As far as work shit goes, its there but it's not as bad as everyone says it is. the key is to understand that Korra is not supposed to be a model hero throughout the earlier parts of the story. She's brash and reckless, and it manifests in a lot of failings that she has to learn from and overcome. The comics are where really gets bad.
My biggest issues with Korra were blatant retcons of the established lore and cannon.
Thanks, sounds good. Korra though sounds like something to skip.
Overrated, boring, dumb characters, lame. Lots of better things to watch.
Name 3 suitable for kids. It’s mostly LGBT trash at this point.
Obviously nothing from the last 2 decades. Animaniacs. Ducktales, Talespin, Darkwing Duck, Batman the Animated Series, the 90s Spider Man cartoon, the 90s X-men.
If you want real anime (instead of wannabes like Avatar) do Dragonball or Inyuasha.
Thanks, sounds good.
