Certain university degrees are essentially pyramid schemes. If you go to school - And can only get a job teaching that subject - Then it's a ponzi, not an education (twitter.com)

Basically all of the woke fields:

  • Gender / trans studies

  • Black/BIPOC studies

  • "Critical studies" of anything

Not just useless, but cult indoctrination.

Put yourself tens of thousands of dollars in debt for the rest of your life, with no career prospects, and get brainwashed by a cult!

Amazing deal, how could anyone refuse?

English

I understand the need for large research universities to have intensive english (that is, crunch english for foreign students). But If you look at the catalog of any university english program, it's basically divided into the crunch english and then "history of literature".

It’s more “critical post modernist interpretation of literature” than “history”

You're literally 100% correct.

I was going over some literary works not too long ago with someone and they threw in the "I have two literary degrees!" (as if that means anything) and I start bringing up some of the French and British classics, and they had NO clue what I was talking about because two degrees, all those classes, and multiple dissertations later, and they didn't even actually cover literary history. It turns out they just discussed specific literature through the lens of post-modernist interpretation.

When I asked why they never heard of the books and prose I brought up, they retorted "You just brought up some obscure works no one has ever heard of. Those aren't classics."

It's shocking, really. Kids are going through these programs to be de-educated.

Sounds a lot like Scientology when you describe it that way, except Scientology expects payment up front.

Another reason it will be hard to get rid of this ideology, they are dependent on it's existence. Not to mention they'll look like complete fools when it comes crashing down.

It's okay, I'm sure there's about to be an explosion of Renaissance Fairs after the covid restrictions are lifted, creating an unprecedented demand for medieval puppet masters.

People who say this often misunderstand the purpose of these studies. They think of them as naive, something engaged with by clueless and misguided youth who'll end up flipping burgers.

The youth may be clueless and misguided when they enter, but these fields are anything but naive - and when they exit the students are robots prepared to wield the whip as protectors of the ideology and of the elite.

Fields like ethnic and gender studies and crt aren't useless at all. They train you to become an officer in the thought police.

There you learn to twist language, to obfuscate reality, to manipulate, to lie, to control others, to use ideological force to hurt and compell others, you learn that above all else you must obey the clergy and never challenge the ideology.

There you are programmed to not have a single ideosyncratic thought. You are inoculated against cruelty by beeing seeped in it, until you start to become a sadist. You are erased and replaced with a purpose within the cult. With your obedience the wrongs will be made right. You are taught that the ends justify the means. You are thought to become an expert at doublethink. You are thought to hate, and thought to express your hatred through a language of love. To speak elegantly and beautifully about kindness while simultaniously not being able to show or feel any kindness or mercy yourself.

The government needs you, the multitude of corporate and non-governmental Ministries of Truth and Safety need you, intelligence agencies, the information and propapanda industries, the DIE public programming seminars need you, marketing departments can use you, in fact wherever you end up the system needs you to spread the ideology - whatever you do you are living up to your purpose. You are the most necessary tool of the cathedral.

You are thought taught that the ends justify the means.

The ends DO justify the means. If the ends are unjust, then it does not matter what means are used. If the ends are just and the means are insufficient, then an injustice occurs. It is only when the end is just and the means sufficient that justice prevails.

Bad means always produce another unjust end even if the primary end is just.

If one wrongs someone along the way and that person survived, that person WILL remember it and WILL hold a grudge. From there on in the question becomes IF the wronged person will seek revenge in order to make sure they one who wronged them will feel hurt just as bad.

That's really unfortunate. It was such a good show and I was looking forward to getting caught up on it some day, but if they went off the deep end that'll almost certainly bleed through in their work.

It's still watchable but not as good as the early seasons. The show didn't get overtly political or anything. The story just went all over the place and nowhere at the same time. It kinda turned into a dull mess. IIRC the creator said he got bored or didn't know where to go with the story, and it shows.

I don't think every degree necessarily should be "well now I make more money for having it."

Sometimes education of some subjects should be good just for education's sake. [Hey, I have an interest in astronomy, I will go take some classes and learn astronomy!]. However, the cost has gotten to be too insane to justify that.

Yeah I totally agree. I was just throwing a random example.

I guess my point was, in the past often times people just sorta went to university just for.... ya know to give them a more well rounded education that wasn't technically career-practical. There can be value in that, it doesn't have to lead to a higher paying job.

For example, going to college to study classical literature or history or something. It can provide value, but it may not translate to a higher paying job which is a huge problem with the amount of people who go to college for a degree that will never pay them a penny and go broke doing so.

Even with the internet there is some value in it [for example you can get a pretty dang inaccurate and one sided view of history if you don't go on the right stuff on the internet.... but wait... schools are that way now too xD but I am talking in the ideal]

The problem with this solution is academia and school systems have been specifically working to stop it. It's been a known answer since the 90's, and was expected to be part of the system of online schools. Teachers unions and the like stopped it from happening.

Remember all those teachers complaining about regulations they had to follow for online schooling? They were talking about rules they created. It was them defeating themselves.

My suspicion has been that stuff like YouTube tutorials and websites are likely able to teach everything needed, but no one outside of the tech field is willing to look.

I agree that education for education's sake can be a good thing; however, it's Anno Domini 2021, you can find an endless amount of information, including completely free college courses on various subjects, on the internet. There's no need go into debt and jump through hoops like mandatory campus housing or mandatory covid jabs if you just want knowledge, not a certificate.

Ponzi scheme is too generous of a term. Liberal arts degrees are a useless waste of money for 99% of people. It's a gold star to make someone feel good about themselves as they drive for uber.

First off, I notice a lot of people demanding other people become carpenters, but make themselves as an exception. Even this thread shows it a bit. If everyone became carpenters, plumbers and the lot it would be a low paying job. So, find a better solution.

What I find annoying about a lot of degrees is how much they promote academic answers and not the outside world. I took courses about anthropologists working at companies to help figure out cultural needs. There are even stories about it really helping. Nothing in that class taught how to promote yourself to the idea, and several people sneered at it.

There are a lot of degrees that are only worthless because the people promoting it only see a single answer.
