Frankly, I found I understood it better as I got older. Couldn't grasp most of it as a kid, except for fractions, which everyone else always seems to have a hard time at. Took an adult refresher course about 20 years ago, but I think I've forgotten most of it again.
A fucking chimp can remember numbers better than basically any human, but we still don't claim the test is wrong.
Yeah, basic numbers-wise, we fall in the lower half of primates for math. So saying you do basic multiplication like a chimpanzee is actually a compliment.
It's been a 50 year effort to undermine and delegitimize quantifiable hard sciences by nonsensical efforts to improve grades on underperforming students by blaming everything else but the actual work and effort being put in by the students themselves.

Asking students to show their work is for the benefit of the student: it lets the student get marks even if they make a mistake. For example, if you forgot to convert from centimeters to meters before performing a calculation you might lose one mark for making that mistake and letting the teacher see where you went wrong, instead of losing all your marks because you failed to provide evidence that you almost got the right answer.
It ALSO helps you learn from your mistakes. How can you fix what you did wrong, if you don't know what you did wrong in the first place?
That makes perfect sense. If anything, multiple choice are a load of crap, a lot of the problems can be backtracked from answers. I've even had a teacher that told us to do exactly that if we are stuck.
Way back when, longer now than it seems... I had an algebra university class with an all multiple choice final exam.
...I got zero answers wrong on the final. And anyone who did get anything wrong deserved to fail, honestly. Because when your question is "what is X in this equation:", and then it DOESN'T MATTER THE EQUATION, because you can just fill it in with every multiple choice answer and see which works via trial and error.

They completely changed the way they teach math about 10 years ago now, with this 'common core', "number line" nonsense, and they did this with the express goal of hindering white and asian parents attempting to help their kids with homework.
