Asking students to show their work is for the benefit of the student: it lets the student get marks even if they make a mistake. For example, if you forgot to convert from centimeters to meters before performing a calculation you might lose one mark for making that mistake and letting the teacher see where you went wrong, instead of losing all your marks because you failed to provide evidence that you almost got the right answer.
It ALSO helps you learn from your mistakes. How can you fix what you did wrong, if you don't know what you did wrong in the first place?
