Don't worry: If it can connect to the internet wirelessly, but you don't manually set it up, it still will send it, just more subtly. Perhaps a direct Starlink connection it auto-picks-up, or a cellular tower internet the company made a deal with: All your data is in text files, it doesn't take much bandwidth to send.

Windows 10/11 under Nadella: Even if you carefully only install drivers from .inf's, Windows Update will load any shovelware the manufacturer's say to without question.

It's shocking. 24/7 phoning home telemetry and the volume DNS requests from a idle corporate laptop was more than the entire rest of my home network combined. I ended up setting up a specific Wifi and VLAN just to connect that crap to and then DNS blocking everything I could. I'm sure it still goes thru when it's on VPN, but I don't leave on when working. They also run everything at a snails pace. If I recall the last time I checked it had nearly if not the best CPU of any device in my entire house and there's so much bullshit scanning it runs like a 10 year old budget machine.

For example, I have a pair of Dell monitors on the desk I work at that are connected together, and I can run a single USB-C cable to a laptop and get dual monitors and laptop charging just from that cable off the monitor, no docks and such required. For me it's nice because I often am loaned different corporate machines to do work on and even after seeing this I couldn't care less if someone harvests all their corporate crap. I'm sure whatever could have been done with DisplayPort though, although I believe some versions of that and HDMI both support a data pass thru as well, albeit less commonly used.

There's a couple things like Windows photo viewer that are a bit of work as well if you used that it won't work without either installing MS Store and re-bloating it, or just finding something else. The base install only comes with Calculator, Notepad, Paint, and a couple other old type things.
I mean, Windows 7 was the best OS I'd used in ages right up until I caved a couple years ago and moved to Windows 10 LTSC, but I'd agree that it's probably the best of what's currently available and is what the default configuration of the OS really should be.
