John has been concerned about the left being seen as the lunatics they are for a while now. He's not concerned that they're actually lunatics, just the fact that they're seen as lunatics. He's voiced those concerns on a number of occasions, and they call that "respectability politics", which is blasphemy against their degenerate religion. That's probably why he's on their shit list now.
That and if they define him as far right, it shifts the Overton Window far left.
To be fair. These sorts routinely call anyone right of Mao 'far right.'

All these political markers are arbitrary. By modern standards, Nixon was far-left. I'm not sure even Bernie Sanders advocates for price controls. So you can call anyone anything by applying the standards of a different time, or that of a different country.
