The main problem is called urbanization, which leads to more expensive and smaller homes with no use for the children. Compare that to rural where children help on the farm. My father is one of 13 children and grew up in a dairy farm. He was worked quite a bit in his days. And all of the children cam and helped the farm out during harvest. There is no need for someone living in a city to haver that many children, they serve no function and can't generate wealth for the family.
Increase rural living and you will increase the birth rate. Its why for every child born to a progressive there are 3 children born to conservatives.
Anytime anyone ever tries to gaslight by claiming the low birth rates are due to economic difficulties, show them this chart. Almost all of the decline comes before Japan's economic bubble popped.

I consider our current economic system to be an experiment like this: Give everyone of 100 or so people 0-100 tokens randomly. Tell them they can do whatever they want to get the other guys' tokens. (You can tell them to avoid violence, if you want, but that's not realistic.) Then after a couple of hours, you see how many tokens everyone has.
Most likely, you would find that the people who started off with the most tokens, and the most manipulative/tricky ones win. Nobody in this whole exercise did any work, but there's a financial system. That's how I look at much of America. We're trading chits whose value is determined by our military. they're the only ones doing work in that sense.
