Journalism Is a Public Good and Should Be Publicly Funded
U.S. journalism needs to be treated as a “public good” like roads, schools and bridges

Give Me Taxpayer Money: The Article.

Also this is a reminder that the most prestigious award in journalism worldwide, the Pulitzer Prize, is named after a happy merchant newspaper owner who invented yellow journalism, and openly used his paper to slander anyone he disliked.

A lot of people think that the current state of journalism, the incredible bald-faced lies and hypocrisy, is a deviation, that it's "not real journalism". That's false. It was always like that, it was always this shit. The only difference is that back in the Duranty or Cronkite times, newspapers and then cable TV was most people's sole source of news, and even if people familiar with whatever was being reported realized it was horseshit, they had no easy way to tell others. The internet changed that, and that's why they're so desperately trying to turn it into a corporate- and government-controlled walled garden.

You want to see publicly funded news, check out the BBC or CBC when the purse strings are held by government you aren't news, you're propaganda lest your money mysteriously vanish

Absolutely. Every once in a while I remind myself of this by reading Twain's "Journalism in Tennessee," published in 1869.

It works for Canada.

And by "works" I mean a completely weaponized media brainwashing the public to accept nothing less than full turnkey tyranny.

I was going to say Canada is a prime example of a failure for allowing it.

Much of the world, no? The BBC in the UK, ABC in Australia, NPR and PBS here, etc.

ABC in Australia,

We've ALSO got the SBS. And the aboriginal NITV

Can't have just one channel like the good old days, we've got to have at least 7, and 17 radio channels.

Journalists are enemies of the people and should be treated as such

No, fuck off and support yourself!

Thanks to AI we don't need your braindead regurgitation of the same talking points and we have plenty of ACTUAL journalists on YouTube and other platforms that go to places themselves to get a story, you're all obsolete.

The BBC, NPR, and CBC have shown that if you even try to bail out the media, they will become ass-sucking cock-sleeves for the government. They will explicitly support terror campaigns against anyone deemed to be a political opponent to the regime. All government funding to the press should be stripped immediately.

It's already publicly funded. Does anyone seriously doubt that the uniparty is embezzling taxpayer money to pay off their media mouthpieces?

Ever seen the Soviet built arcade games?

Either way, I would love to do a state owned arcade collection.

There were also arcade games

Journalism by and large here in Canada is taxpayer funded. And it fuckin sucks.

If print media can't keep up with the times and requires being propped up by taxpayer money, then it should fail.

But since it likely won't, the taxpayers should be able to decline paying taxes toward specific things. Such as journalism that is paid to lie to them, like it is here.

"The press is a gang of cruel faggots. Journalism is not a profession or a trade. It is a cheap catch-all for fuckoffs and misfits—a false doorway to the backside of life, a filthy piss-ridden little hole nailed off by the building inspector, but just deep enough for a wino to curl up from the sidewalk and masturbate like a chimp in a zoo-cage."

There is, but it requires the general public to realize EVERY "news" source is propaganda and acquire actual media awareness.

Scott Adams is going a good job of educating people on his podcast.

All advanced countries in the World have publicly funded media, in the US I guess that would be PBS and NPR.

It is a good idea because private media won´t produce cultural or history documentaries that spread useful knowledge, they don´t produce anything that does not turn a profit, the problem is that nearly always the publicly funded media ends up being a mouth piece for whoever is ruling the government, they are not necessarily woke, in Russia for example public media are pro-Putin, the problem is the person in government and not necessarily the media being publicly funded.

I wish canada was like the bbc where we could opt out of paying for publicly funded propaganda. Also wouldn't mind opting out of government healthcare

Good god, no. Isn't the current model bad enough, with corporate news unanimously running PR for the regime?

I suppose it would make the current setup more or less "official" by removing any pretense of fairness (never mind the myth of "objectivity").

I mean, look at Canadia. Their press is definitely not free. This discussion board recently went over the unanimous Canadian publication of a prefabricated headline.
