How far we have fallen.
Before, it was “Make a good game, make good money”. Nowadays, it’s “Make good microtransaction UI, make shit tons of money”.
The year is 2024 and all those games did just come out again but like the 5th installment of them and they still aren't as good as the original.
But this time they're been "enhanced" with regular DLC, season passes, microtransactions and put behind a paywall that you need to remain subscribed to in order to buy access to said game that you will never own and will be banned from (no refunds) if you say a mean word or be critical about its mandatory anti-cheat system in a review.
And the first to fourth instalments have been removed from sale.
Soon to be "reimagined" for a even more modern audience. At which point there'll be nothing recognizable about them but the name.
Off the top of my head the following already exist:
Farcry 6
Halo 7
Hitman I honestly have no idea but far more then 5
Zelda again too many to count
Pokemon 30???
BotW and Tears are both great games. You have to think of it from a kid's perspective of having this massive world to lose yourself. Along with having physics-based intuitive ways to solve puzzles increasing that immersion.
Yes they are "repetitive" but if the gameplay is something you like that isn't a problem.
Oblivion "Gameplay"
Jump around to level your acrobatics.
Punch the wall to level your brawl.
Is that not how you do it IRL?
Separate purchase = separate game
Zelda is just applying the same story line formula, changing bits here and there, add a few new mechanics and they have a new installment. While Nintendo has their problems they are still releasing stuff that works and fans love. Western publishers on the other hand seem to enjoy alienating their fan bases with politics and shouting racism whenever their "diverse game" is being outsold by an indie dev in their attic.
The greatest days of
gamingentertainment in general are behind us now. The golden age was short.Fuck yeah Paper Mario TTYD, peak mario RPG
MvDK too, the only good one in the series
HL2 a masterpiece
Vampire the Masquerade an absolutely legendary game I still play today
Metroid Prime 2 another masterpiece
What happened gaming industry..
The art style of Paper Mario TTYD has aged incredibly well and it’s one of the best JRPGs I’ve ever played.
Now if Nintendo finally gets the memo and make a proper turn based JRPG Paper Mario game…
I’m really thinking of getting a PS2 and dive into retro gaming
Just use an emulator. I say this as someone who still has PS2s. Retro gaming on original hardware is rapidly becoming the easiest way to spend money.
I remember when old Nintendo cartridges were $1-$2 at the thrift store or Babbage's in the mall. Now everything old is "collectible".
Everything, across all fields. Old shit is better.
I highly recommend Silent Hill 2 if that's the case. Primarily because all subsequent releases of that game graphically altered it and removed a lot of the fog which was a huge contributor to the atmospheric feel of the game, but was largely implemented as a technical workaround so the poor PS2 wouldn't have to render everything and catch fire.
Very good game, but the genuine experience can only be had on the PS2. So if you're going to invest in that old hardware, make sure that game is on your list of games to pick up for it.
Will do. My brother and I played the first Silent Hill together and had a blast
Sounds like a plan.
I still have a PS2 and can't recommend it more. You can also play the PS1 games on it and use freemcboot to play also older consoles.
Emulators are cool, but if you get a chipped PS2 you will be able to play burned discs and will have a very authentic experience.
You don’t even need to chip it anymore. There are soft mods out there that’ll let you play right off of SD card, or if you have a fat PS2, the internal hard drive and Ethernet.
2004 was an absolute boom year, but nothing can really beat 2007.
My brother and I recently had a shock when we counted the great games that released year by year.
2002-2012, every year had great games, each year represented a big chunk of our favorite game library.
We were stunned that multiple classic games, now widely revered, released in the same year, every year. My memory of that time is getting a little vague, somehow I just assumed they were further apart.
The last decade, we've added maybe five or six games to our list. Used to be there was more than that every year.
It's bleak now.
Unfortunately, we've been waiting for this for quite some time. A true gaming crash. Not as bad as The Great Death of the Arcades, but a collapse in basically all of AAA gaming, and games-as-servicing. It will come with the rest of the economic collapse as everybody starts cutting entertainment budges.
The thing is, there's never been so many independent game makers nowadays. The problem is a lot of it is still centralized around a southern California economy that's going to get purged along with the rest of the state of California.
From the ashes, shall be born a new generation.
It's funny, this era of games is when I backed away from gaming; almost nothing on this list is interesting to me, now or at the time (except Katamari Damacy).
IDK, this is list is just epic to me.
I don't think I appreciated Doom 3 as much as it deserved. Expecting run and gun, got horror-style jumpscare in the dark gameplay which was part of the disappointment. But the game was mechanically good other than the retarded decision to not allow flashlight and weapon at the same time.
Doom 3 deviated too much in genre. The fan base for Doom are the people who just want to shoot demons as fast as possible with interesting guns. They instead went into horror which just turned their original base off and the horror game fans aren't interested in playing doom. If they made it an original IP instead it would have sold better.
This image looks like it was made in 2004.
I just finished replaying Xenogears the other night and it got me thinking how 1998-2008 really was the sweet spot for gaming. The golden age you get in every entertainment industry, when the enthusiasts who grew up loving the medium come of age and technology/techniques improved enough that they could make their visions materialize, while normies/ corporate suits hadn’t completely wormed their way into every facet of the industry in the name of clout or money. Doesn’t mean that no great works of art can come after, but It really is a lightning in a bottle moment that will never happen again. Kind of like how Marvel comics has never managed to recreate the magic of 1981-1991, or horror movies are still trying to reach the quality of the masterpieces from the late 70s- early 80s. Kind of sad how you may know times are good but you never truly realize how great things are until they’re long gone.
wow ... a picture for ants!
Chronicles of Riddick just casually sitting there, completely forgotten by time despite being a foundational game in the "first person melee" genre. While also proving movie tie in games can be not only good, but better than the movies they promote.
What an absolute classic.
Nice to see DOOM3 get some love
I don't think they were released the same year.
Vampire Masquerade was better.
