My brother and I recently had a shock when we counted the great games that released year by year.
2002-2012, every year had great games, each year represented a big chunk of our favorite game library.
We were stunned that multiple classic games, now widely revered, released in the same year, every year. My memory of that time is getting a little vague, somehow I just assumed they were further apart.
The last decade, we've added maybe five or six games to our list. Used to be there was more than that every year.
It's bleak now.
Unfortunately, we've been waiting for this for quite some time. A true gaming crash. Not as bad as The Great Death of the Arcades, but a collapse in basically all of AAA gaming, and games-as-servicing. It will come with the rest of the economic collapse as everybody starts cutting entertainment budges.
The thing is, there's never been so many independent game makers nowadays. The problem is a lot of it is still centralized around a southern California economy that's going to get purged along with the rest of the state of California.
From the ashes, shall be born a new generation.
