In this case, its almost certainly them attempting to get in headlines. Because at this point, literally any attention is a net improvement for the game's profitability and subcount because they've been dead and stagnate for probably nearly a decade.
So as long as it gets a few people talking about it, it'll almost certainly get them a few new players just by sheer curiousity and even a few is a huge increase over normal.
This is just going to result in a bunch of people signing up for the free trial and making bearded ladies named ItIsMaam and MissGender and running around making 41% jokes. I hope they realize this.
That book was so hilarious, all the ways that it was obvious to the reader she was a she but the characters couldn’t figure it out. And because she was really a she, not actually a he who decided he was a she because tumblr.
I encountered some of this nonsense in the Baldur's Gate 3 character editor and it is outright annoying, especially if you're trying to do a quick appearance for a coop group.
Otherwise, I'll admit the character visuals in BG3 are pretty damn good. Doesn't exactly make up for the ESG bullshit, but I at least don't want to give the false impression that the art itself sucked.
