Guess what the media is now blaming obesity on...

Yes, absolutely the fault of The Climate Doom and nothing at all to do with the fact that we locked them in their houses for two fucking years because their grandparents were afraid of the sniffles.
I'm not denying that, but all the stats I've seen indicate that the Covid lockdowns, the masks, the online learning and the general indolence we've inculcated them with over the past couple of years has contributed to making the problem significantly worse.

Gee, who could’ve predicted that, after the last two years? Literally who? /s
I see many kids in my town always outside playing, riding a bicycle, etc. They are slim.
There are kids in town I only see getting off the school bus to dissapear inside the house and never do anything outside. They are so obese it's a "guess the gender" game and if the teachers groom them into it, they will think them feeling like shit and discomfort with their body means they are trans.
Inactivity / glued to a screen all day + constant access to food. Since always inside, extra whining at the parents to get food that will pacify them.
My parents sent us to play outside if we complained to get food before meal time. You can see which parents do that, and which parents give the kids food and oversized meals at every hint of begging for more.
The government lockdowns accelerated this trend, but it kept getting worse and worse before that.
Yup. I feel so bad for the kids. As a former fatkid (so like...average today), I had to work my ass off to overcome that. It took me until I was almost 30. These kids who are morbidly obese hamplanets are just fucked.
Parents just need to learn portion control, kids don't need to be punished with being sent outside every time they even hint at being hungry.
Also, let's consider that the governmental intervention in food created the homogenization of our diets by making it into varieties of corn syrup. The corn that we grow, specifically, that has almost no protein in it, unlike the Maize of earlier civilizations.
The comments are just as bad. CBS blames climate change. Twitter (irony alert) jumps in to say, no, it's screens and internet! Now, I think those things can absolutely be very bad...but for obesity? Contributing factor, at best. It's bizarre (and maybe astroturfed?) that everyone jumped on the phones, tablet, video games, internet blame-train. Plenty of people spend their entire day in front of a screen without getting fat. These Twitter weirdos are in serious denial.
The issue is, primarily, diet. Secondary is people just not giving a shit, and the normalization of all that nonsense, and lack of self control, respect, or responsibility. Screens are way down the list. Screens are on the top of some other lists, no question...but not being a fucking fatass.
Pathetic.
I don't think it's astroturfed, I think it's just denial. Not because I don't think there are interests that would astroturf it if they had reason to, but because they don't need to.
This is one area where Twitter does seem reflective of larger society. Almost nobody wants to admit that the root cause is people shoving food in their faces. Not even the diet and fitness industry wants to touch the idea for the most part, and to be fair "it's your own goddamn fault" is a hard sell no matter how diplomatically you try to phrase it.
Good point, you're probably right. I guess even I'm surprised by how stupid people can be on Twitter, sometimes. It just seemed so freaking weird, I couldn't quite believe it.
Not just that, but the wrong food. If you're eating the right stuff, you can shove a lot of food in your face without getting fat. But, still, quantity is a big deal; some people just enjoy eating, eat things they shouldn't, and eat too much of it.
As you say, no matter the specific reason, it does often come down to 'well, you did this to yourself. Which is hard to swallow...so to speak.
I figured the answer was going to be white supremacy / colonialism.
They aren't wrong on that, but climate change, really? Even if it was fucking 5 degrees hotter every day, climate change isn't the reason. I was sort of one of those and wish in hindsight I spent more time outside myself as a teenager especially, but I wasn't even close to some of these modern kids.
I guess it's because their parents just let them at least partly. I blame the shoving of kids out of the way to watch a phone from birth myself. They don't learn to ever want to do anything else. I mean one of the more well balanced kids I know is on the spoiled side and let do about whatever he wants and chooses to be active and go outside. The difference I see? While he did grow up with the phone/tablet he wasn't raised by it. Like his parents actually treated him like their kid and not some inconvenience that gets in the way of their life that should just shut up.
Even the most apocalyptic climate doomism would mean any particular place is now the temperature of a place 70 miles to the south. Oh lord, kids are fat in Charlotte because it's the temperature of Columbus and kids are fat in Richmond because it's the temperature of Charlotte. And kids are fat in Baltimore because it's the temperature of Richmond. Fucking really.
Your analysis is close-enough to be accurate, at least for the northern hemisphere.
Er, you mean Colombia, SC? The most famous Columbus is in Ohio.
Yeah, typo.
Oddly enough, I spent the past two days in bed, and lost five pounds. But I suppose the way I had to change my diet around (especially considering I just got the flu) helped out with that, drinking so much water and not a single sip of soda (which I do try to limit myself with already).
Sugary drinks are probably the single most destructive food invention we've created. They are addictive, blood-sugar bombs, that contain mostly sugar, and have more empty calories than most candy.
I remember that I picked up some strawberry-lemonade drink at Walmart, and before I bought it, decided to look at their 3 pack of cookies and compare. The cookies had fewer calories and less sugar. The cookies. I would have been better off buying cookies and milk, than single strawberry-lemonade.
Yep, I've really started to realize that the past few years. Literally less healthy than dessert sweets.
No no - I saw this study - it’s racism. Because black people are under so much stress from systemic racism by wypipo that their metabolisms are disrupted (Google it)
I assumed it was racism, but I think I'm still right since Climate Change is racist.
I got it wrong too. I went with COVID.
Really? Climate is to blame for my obesity? Funny that, I thought it was just MY fault for sitting around and eating a lot instead of going outside more as a kid like I should have done (like I try to do now as an adult in my attempts to lose weight)
Funny how that climate works! I could have swore my weight gain was MY problem and MY fault.
In all seriousness, the one good thing about modern day video games becoming more and more unbearable is that it has completely bored me of the medium and has made me want to venture outside more in my free time. Somehow it's no longer interesting to me to spend hours upon hours on video games anymore. Or maybe I'm just getting old and bored of video games in general.
It's literally that Simpsons moment where Marge cleanses Itchy and Scratchy and the kids revolt in disgust forcing them back outside.
What are your kids even going to do outside? You're just putting them in danger of being raped or murdered at worst and far more commonly becoming whores and drug addicts unless you watch them like a hawk.
Meanwhile, the government
And also 2 years of fear porn and lockdowns. And 4 year-olds with I pads. Etc.
Don't forget 'meat bad!'
Mmm... delicious soy.
Without looking, climate change.
You get the prize.
You know, I unironically used to work for a climate activist organization (yes, really), and yet, even… 7 years ago, when I essentially fell out with them, I probably wouldn’t have predicted it would come to this…
Really.
I’ve seen “the belly of the beast”, and even I am surprised at how… Wack, it has become…

Something very weird happened around 2015-16 (though I suspect the process was in play long before that), and it has only accelerated since…
Like the collapse of Rome/Constantinople, but accelerated massively…
So, we just used to go to the local pool on the really hot days. Mucking about in the water is great exercise, especially when you're a kid.
KLYMUTT KEEPIN THE KIDS INSIDE
Cold is more adverse to exercising outdoors than heat. Heat isn't an issue for 100% of the year in most of the US, and like 80-90% in the southern parts of the US (where it only really comes into play in the middle of the day in the summer months).
Children are fat because of stuffing their fat faces, and parents using stuffing their fat faces to shut them up.
Sort of. Heat is a problem if you can't get to shade, don't have enough water, or can't get to air conditioning.
Cold's biggest problem is snow and running though cold air. That shit hurts. Oh, and getting fucked up by ice.
There are plenty of places where it never gets cold enough to be a concern yet heatstroke is a real issue.
Except no it's not, because you have to be an idiot to get heatstroke by purposely exerting yourself in conditions where heat stroke is likely.
You can very easily avoid heat stroke by not engaging in physical labor in the hottest hours of the day & drinking enough water, hence why the "siesta" exists.
Now that we have shit like air conditioning, the idea that heat is this super deadly thing is just laughable.
By contrast, cold is very quickly lethal to anyone who lacks serious shelter and heating, which is why cold kills 20x more people than heat
Well, I guess with people no longer caring as much about COVAIDS and without monkeypox spreading quite as much, I guess it's time to break out Ol' Reliable.
