I was joking about this yesterday, as a hilariously unlikely idea; I had no idea we're actually doing this.
Here's some context: a group of public health bureaucrats and their tame politicians just got approval to build a "permanent supportive housing" project in the middle of my densly populated neighborhood (illegally consuming greenspace in the process).
They got several million dollars from the federal and provincial government to do so. According to the funding proposal that the mayor leaked, they're going to setup a "safe supply program", where adicts will be supplied with clean needles and drugs at the taxpayers expense.
So this doesn't really surprise me; they've got several plans to subtly kill people while making it look like their own choice (like privatising all retirement homes and creating food shortages by destroying crops under flimsy pretexts).
But, my God, I always grew up with the myth of the "dummy" Americans doing all sorts of crazy things that we "civilized" Canadians were far to clever to fall for. I have so many relatives, university educated professionals, who go along with this stuff and I realize that no, we're just cowards who will wait until the Americans save us from ourselves, time and again and all the hulabaloo over "muh freedoms" is not just rednecks being loud, it's a fundamental skill that we lack.
It's quite a bit of cognitive dissonance to have to overcome.
