This. I've made a comments with people over the years about having to pay however much in income tax that year. Usually their response is some semblance of shock with a comment about how they get a refund instead. They have no idea what they actually are paying in taxes.
Income tax is my single biggest expenditure each year, and it's not even close. Something seems wrong about that, even if I accept the shitlib argument that "taxes are just what we pay for civilization"

An ideal system of government would allow citizens to allocate their taxes to the programs that they want so no one would have to finance something they find morally reprehensible. Also taxes would be at a flat rate and all social programs would be at the state and local level with a skeletal federal government serving to defend the nations lair and sea borders, with local militias handling land defense.
I think by "all social programs" you mean and there would be no social programs, only privately run programs financed by donations.
Nah, I'm fine with local governments paving roads and running food banks since theyre small enough to avoid the corruption that comes with massive bureaucracies and directly connected to the populace.
Local governments are super corrupt, but it's easier for a determined group of citizens to fix them and hold the politicians accountable, or failing that to move to a less corrupt place.
And that's why they wouldn't be corrupt. They'd know it would be all to easy to sort them out.

My local government is sued every 5 years or so by various contractors for breaking contracts. First they hire a company that goes over cost and time limits, then they fire the company, then they pay said company a settlement because they never actually put a clause enforcing estimates in the contract.
Nobody does anything, we just shuffle the mayor and move on.

I put enough money into RSPs that I haven't paid taxes in three years. This year my contribution ran out so I quit working and will love off the savings, again, paying no taxes as long as I keep my spending down.
It's not like I'll ever be able to retire anyway, so who cares about RSP limits? Might as well use them to keep from giving my money to these corrupt fucks.
