And now you know (if you didn't already) why taxes are usually hidden through a payroll tax paid for by your employer before you get your paycheck. Because if you had to personally cut a check to the government at some regular interval, you might ask yourself that question more often.

This. I've made a comments with people over the years about having to pay however much in income tax that year. Usually their response is some semblance of shock with a comment about how they get a refund instead. They have no idea what they actually are paying in taxes.
Income tax is my single biggest expenditure each year, and it's not even close. Something seems wrong about that, even if I accept the shitlib argument that "taxes are just what we pay for civilization"

If you ended witholding, in April of the following year, there would either be a revolution, or a collapse on the government as it failed to pay it's loans.
If Americans were getting an invoice of $5,000 to $10,000 every April, you'd get even communists screaming "Taxation is Theft!"
