"diplomatic boycott"

We're not sending a political delegation, but the athletes are still going, because it would be humiliating for us to forfeit the Olympics.

This is a cheap virtue signal, a mirror image of every time China accuses the US police of genociding black men.

Whoever wins WW3, their virtue signal will be enshrined in history as a new holocaust. If China wins, America will forever be the continent of murdering black men on an industrial scale. If America wins, China will have genocided the Muslims until the end of time.

Hard disagree.

If China wins blacks will be exterminated and America will become a lesson in how to not fall for the guiles of lesser races.

China does not care in the slightest about the leftist takes on race.

Exactly. When China brings up America's history, it's only to stir up shit here, not because they have any moral authority on human rights.

They care that it makes their enemies look bad, which is why they promote and fund race issues in the west.

Announce it now so the left cheers about a "brave stance" and attempt to improve their dismal approval ratings, but when the time comes, far enough in the future, the NPCs will literally not remember their own headline lies to face their delusions.

Exactly. Cheap, pathetic virtue-signal.

because it would be humiliating for us to forfeit the Olympics.

Except it wouldn't, would it?

It's the fucking olympics. Nobody gives a rats ass about anyone but athletes. 99.9% of people will not even be aware this 'boycott' even happened.

But if the the US didn't send a team, the WHOLE WORLD would notice. That would be an ACTUAL message to Beijing. This message - this half-measure, is meaningless. All it says to Beijing is that they can keep doing they want, and the US won't do anything that's even the least bit of bother.

I’m sure president Xi will sorely miss having Hunter Biden smoking crack and banging underage prostitutes during the Winter Olympics.

Frankly this is probably more due to security concerns for their people being in Beijing. They know they're in a cobflict and they know at the very least they will be spied upon, and they're not confident enough they won't lose something whilst they're there to not take the easy out a justifiable boycott presents

I thought it was about that tennis player disappearing. (didn't read the article though)

Biden didn't do anything except shit his pants, but I'm not going to spin this into a bad thing. It won't accomplish anything on its own but that's another matter. Basically any negative action towards China will get my support.

Ffs. Have the guts to completely boycott it. Didnt we do that for one of those 1970s Olympics??

And, between the godawful Olympic "coverage" NBC does and the death of cable does anyone even watch it anymore? It'd probably be no big loss. I haven't watched the Olympics in 9 years

This is a DIPLOMATIC boycott. They're just not going over in some public display of officials.

This is so minor you'd need a microscope to see it. Theater.

A USOPC boycott would be very difficult to pull off.

Let's look back at the boycotts of the 1980's.

If an NOC decides to boycott the games, the IOC's response is that they will permit that nation's qualified athletes to compete regardless of the NOC's wishes on the matter. They do this to make it clear that the IOC is not subordinate to the NOCs. But because their NOC is not participating, they compete under the Olympic flag and anthem. Any sanctions the NOCs decide to levy against those athletes is their problem after the fact, and not the IOC's concern.

For a country with as many athletes as the US, you WOULD have people crossing the picket line to compete anyway.

A more practical gesture would be for the USOPC to deliberately CHOOSE to participate under the Olympic flag rather than the Stars & Stripes. A bunch of countries did this in 1980.

CHOOSE to participate under the Olympic flag

How about the ROC flag at these Wuhan Olympics.

Adding tax breaks for corporations moving their manufacturing to the US, or at least the Western Hemisphere, and a huge tariff on any imports on products manufactured in China would do more good. But that would actually hurt his commie buddies in Beijing and his globalist buddies on wall street.

Honestly, good for Biden. This administration has been one disaster after the other, and it's nice to see he's getting this right.

I'm guessing his handlers looked at his ratings and decided to pick something from Trump that both sides like to improve those.

Just enough to virtue signal but not so much that it would piss off his corporate sponsors who benefit off of the Olympics, or disgruntle the Chinese government too much.

That's all very likely, but I'm surprised he's even doing this much. I don't even know if he has the authority to ban US athletes from competing, although that didn't stop him with the vaccine mandates. As for not disgruntling the Chinese government, I don't get the impression that they'll react any better than if he imposed a total boycott. Like our own leftists you're either bending the knee or you aren't. Stand up to them on anything and you're the enemy.

Wonder which puppeteer finally looked out the window and realized the emperor was running around without clothes.

This is a damage control move that wont amount to anything. If his handlers actually wanted to send a message to China, they would do a complete boycott and pressure other countries not to go as well.
