It's becoming rare to find a dumb tv in a real world store. I may have to aim for a computer monitor when my current tv craps out, if I can find one with decent port access. Hopefully "smart" never comes to monitors.
Yeah, I might have to shop for such a monitor. Double checked all the monitors in my house right now and none of them have the right port jacks.
I didn't really care about it that much until I realized just how bad these modern digital tvs are. Had a really nice crt but it got fucked in a flood, so was forced to "upgrade".
Don't connect it to the internet, and they won't be able to.
secondary market
So, you won't be able to sell your own tv without their permission or use if it you don't subscribe to their coming service. That's what this is really about.
This. There's a bit of schadenfreude in knowing that the looters are getting screwed over by this "feature", but this is just one other story in a massive line illustrating that you don't actually own any of this "smart" crap, and that all the online requirements just mean you can get disconnected at any time. I'd ask when the average person is going to wake up and stop wasting their money on this junk but I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen even if robots come around literally plugging them into something like the Matrix.
Samsung is one of the groups pushing against right to repair laws. They specifically mention secondary market and legal purchaser. If you bought it second hand direct from the other, how do you prove it was yours to a digital agent?
As for the subscription service, it is a bit conspiracy theory, but with all these other digital services and Samsung already having their own streaming networks, it's not a stretch. Subscription services is one of the most lucrative cows to ever milk. For example, my weather app, when I went to first purchase it, it was $6 for the full app (remove ads, storm tracking, hurricane prediction, aiport/wind info etc.) When I got it for $4, it was only to remove ads and track storms. Hurricane path prediction and other important data such as this was suddenly a subscription service. They get their information and graphics supplied free from the US Weather Service and NOAA, so there shouldn't be a continuing fee. However, here we are.
No you wouldn't think it would go down well, but they've been conditioning people for decades. Planned obsolescence, forced upgrades, always online, right to repair. It's one reason Tesla doesn't want you to service their cars.
Sure. I'm just pointing out there's a lot of confusion about the meaning of the word 'conspiracy'.
If I were in charge (and not co-opted by the cabal), I'd make school kids read and memorize the dictionary. Maybe an abridged version for the less capable.
Why don't they do this shit over here there's probably way more stolen shit since all the looting in Minneapolis and everywhere else across the country
I know everyone would love to stick it to the 13/50 and all but you all need to look at the long term implications of this.
A fucking company has the ability to block you from using a piece of hardware at their whim. Forest for the trees folks - go ahead and shut down the stolen shit but this also implies that companies are looking into this in the future and it will be used elsewhere.
They have the function so they can ransomware televisions. Want to use the TV? Just send them a Satoshi or two every year and they won't shut down your TV remotely. The fact they can use it in case of theft is a side-benefit.
And rooting is pointless on its own. They're going after it as if it were a personal attack. So you need to full-on pirate instead. Phone bricks itself if rooted? Run a pirate OS that emulates the checks and "phones home" to your laptop instead of its central processor in order to bypass the ROM-built-in checks. We have a right to root our phones, won in court, but that won't stop companies from treating it as worse than murder, it's an ever-escalating battle.
'Samsung seems to be trying to discourage users from modifying the software on their new Galaxy Z Fold 3s, giving them a message that unlocking the phone’s bootloader will render the phone’s cameras unusable (via Android Police). This isn’t the first time we’ve seen phone manufacturers pull this sort of trick, but it seems to represent an escalation in Samsung’s fight against its users who want to gain complete control over their phones.
An XDA Forums user confirms that after unlocking the bootloader, the Z Fold 3’s cameras were completely non-functional: facial recognition, loading the camera app, and trying third-party camera apps all failed for them. The user reports that re-locking the bootloader made the cameras work again. ' Aug 24, 2021
What the fuck does the camera have anything to do with the bootloader? That is such a weird move by Samsung.
I personally find that the users who are interested in unrooting their phones are more interested in the technical shit you can access to it. Normies are the ones who use the cameras the most.
I have a couple "smart" objects but they're essentially like an in-between to an object that is "dumb".
One is an AC smart controller - it sends all the remote control AC signals to a cheapass dumb window AC.
It's one-way too - the AC doesn't communicate with the controller in any way.
This way I have the best of both worlds - if the company that makes this decides to stop existing or shut off its servers, I can at least just go back to using my AC as is because the AC is dumb by default.
I also have a "smart plug" - just one - for a simple fan. Same thing, if the company pulls the plug (kek) I just remove the smart plug and I still can use the regular plug it's connected to.
I dislike devices having it "on board" like a Smart TV but I think separate devices that adds functionality to existing dumb devices like the ones I mentioned are an ok compromise - you at least have an alternative of just using it the old way like you did before if they ever decide to discontinue them.
And if you have concerns about glowies or bugmen going into your system, again very easy to simply disconnect these devices and keep your original functionality.
Initially, this is a good idea and I love seeing these morons suffer for stealing stuff. But then I began to worry on the far wider consequences. Like, someone getting cancelled because they offended somebody, and then their TVs become expensive paper weights. Kinda like what happened with Alex Jones. It's just Alex Jones, you don't have to worry about! Then, give a couple of months to a year, and now everybody is getting cancelled out of their accounts because somebody REEEEd.
It's one of those things where we dislike both sides. I'm happy Samsung is doing this, but maybe not happy they're able to do it. If we put tracking chips in all newborns, we could find abducted children too.
I mean it’s nice that the feature works in this case, but I don’t want a TV that would do that to me. Or a computer, phone, tablet, or anything that connects to the internet really.
I'm not totally sure I want my TV to have this "feature".
Since these do, by all means shut off the looted TVs though.
Buy 'dumb' tvs, or hook up a monitor to your computer with some wired speakers.
It's becoming rare to find a dumb tv in a real world store. I may have to aim for a computer monitor when my current tv craps out, if I can find one with decent port access. Hopefully "smart" never comes to monitors.
Stop watching TV. Don't need to buy one.
Game consoles need some kind of tv. The hardware doesn't necessitate a habit of sitcom viewing.
Game consoles work great on a computer monitor. I have one that has composite and component input and S-video in addition to VGA and DVI.
It's even got picture in picture.
Yeah, I might have to shop for such a monitor. Double checked all the monitors in my house right now and none of them have the right port jacks.
I didn't really care about it that much until I realized just how bad these modern digital tvs are. Had a really nice crt but it got fucked in a flood, so was forced to "upgrade".
a smart monitor would be redundant. but Apple does get idiots to pay 3x more for stuff.
I guess the HDR monitors are kind of "smart"? Proprietary tech to connect to proprietary tech.
Is it a coincidence that houses not in a ghetto cost 3x more?
The best thing you can do i just keep the TV unhooked so you don't have to look for dumb TVs.
So far TVs don't require you to be online all the time to work nor do they force updates, so you should be good.
Don't connect it to the internet, and they won't be able to.
So, you won't be able to sell your own tv without their permission or use if it you don't subscribe to their coming service. That's what this is really about.

"But I NEED my coffee pot to have an internet connection! How else will it know when the fridge is out of milk?"
That's why you ALWAYS leave a note!
This is a little bit conspiracy theory don't you think?
Shutting off legally purchased TVs wouldn't go down well.
Samsung is one of the groups pushing against right to repair laws. They specifically mention secondary market and legal purchaser. If you bought it second hand direct from the other, how do you prove it was yours to a digital agent?

I use Weawow. Totally free.
Are you serious?
No you wouldn't think it would go down well, but they've been conditioning people for decades. Planned obsolescence, forced upgrades, always online, right to repair. It's one reason Tesla doesn't want you to service their cars.
bruh literally half your posts are conspiracy theories about chicks/ wtf are you sayin here lmao
Is it a conspiracy when two G7 nations have admitted it?
That would, in fact, be by definition a conspiracy, yes.
a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful.
the action of plotting or conspiring.
What do you think?
What I meant is, it's not on the level of flat earthers or those other idiots. There's plenty of evidence that I am at least partly right.
Sure. I'm just pointing out there's a lot of confusion about the meaning of the word 'conspiracy'.
If I were in charge (and not co-opted by the cabal), I'd make school kids read and memorize the dictionary. Maybe an abridged version for the less capable.
Yeah because a conspira is a group of people planning something, usually in secret, and I dont think it was announced before?
Have you been alive in any of the last 5, 10, 20 years?
Why don't they do this shit over here there's probably way more stolen shit since all the looting in Minneapolis and everywhere else across the country
What I’m thinking. Democrat politicians would twist themselves into knots trying to defend rioting thugs
"Summer of love"
Apple did
My guess is South Africa has a lot of theft, which is why Samsung has this shit in their TVs there. Probably does not exist in American TVs.
with smart TVs, it would be a trivial addition. It could even be patched in.
I admire your optimism.
That's a very good question!
I know everyone would love to stick it to the 13/50 and all but you all need to look at the long term implications of this.

Rooting won't even help against malware built directly in to ROMs.
Yes, until you won’t be able to anymore.
And this, frens, is why you never buy a 'smart' object that doesn't absolutely need to be 'smart'
I have a couple "smart" objects but they're essentially like an in-between to an object that is "dumb".

Is anybody blaming Samsung?
Also - every Korean I know is based as hell and don't give AF about what black looters think.
There are many articles + thousands of comments on different sites.
I think a lot of people don't want their TVs spying on them, to which this is peripherally related. I don't think anyone has sympathy for looters.

The time from Alex Jones says to confirmed reality is now down to 3 months.
Soft disconnects R RAYCISSS
Why doesn't everyone think of the poor dindus?
Good! They need to do that here. Ignore the morons and keep doing what you’re doing.
It's one of those things where we dislike both sides. I'm happy Samsung is doing this, but maybe not happy they're able to do it. If we put tracking chips in all newborns, we could find abducted children too.
That’s true. And how can you trust them to only use it for looters
You're not double-vaxxed? SmartTV needs to adjust your TV watching habits.
Yea. I was thinking of that. I liked the idea of the looting part but that power goes beyond that
Based
I mean it’s nice that the feature works in this case, but I don’t want a TV that would do that to me. Or a computer, phone, tablet, or anything that connects to the internet really.
Everyone.
Everyone is the bad guy here.
Do people know you can use a "Smart TV" by fucking unplugging the Internet/disabling the wifi connection to keep this from happening?
One wonders for how long. They discount these TVs by selling you out.
https://www.businessinsider.com/smart-tv-data-collection-advertising-2019-1
yep. Ads subsidize your TV - classic razor and blade model. Sell you the TV cheap so they can sell other shit to you.
Yeah ads and they monitor everything you watch trying to sell data about your consoooomer habits. DNRTFA but I know
