And this, frens, is why you never buy a 'smart' object that doesn't absolutely need to be 'smart'
I have a couple "smart" objects but they're essentially like an in-between to an object that is "dumb".
One is an AC smart controller - it sends all the remote control AC signals to a cheapass dumb window AC.
It's one-way too - the AC doesn't communicate with the controller in any way.
This way I have the best of both worlds - if the company that makes this decides to stop existing or shut off its servers, I can at least just go back to using my AC as is because the AC is dumb by default.
I also have a "smart plug" - just one - for a simple fan. Same thing, if the company pulls the plug (kek) I just remove the smart plug and I still can use the regular plug it's connected to.
I dislike devices having it "on board" like a Smart TV but I think separate devices that adds functionality to existing dumb devices like the ones I mentioned are an ok compromise - you at least have an alternative of just using it the old way like you did before if they ever decide to discontinue them.
And if you have concerns about glowies or bugmen going into your system, again very easy to simply disconnect these devices and keep your original functionality.
