I’m convinced most atheists didn’t really give it much thought. They go “well, I’m liberal and/or gay so I can’t be religious which means I’m an atheist” and that’s about it. For them, atheism didn’t come at the end of a process of introspection and questioning, it was simply another garment they gathered in creating their costume of “progressive.” This is why I can’t tolerate other atheists. Atheism, if arrived at after thought, should go hand-in-hand with skepticism. Most other atheists don’t have that. They mindlessly go along with every liberal thought (the vaccine is wonderful, nobody ever groomed a child ever, Trump wanted to execute all minorities and gays and it’s only by wearing knitted pussy hats that his holocaust was stopped) and oppose any detractors as vehemently as the most brainwashed cultist.
It’s been a long time since I saw the show (when it first aired!) but obviously it was good enough for me to remember it fairly well 30-something years later. I recall that the white jocks spray painting the word on the character’s car was prompted by an escalating argument over something else. That felt much more realistic than these days, where it would just be a bunch of racist whites running around trying to terrorize blacks unprovoked. Also, the show made a point of how even the black characters had prejudices. At one point, both the whites and blacks are locked up (jail cell? campus holding?) and one of the blacks accosts the (white) cop (campus security) as being racist. At that point the cop shut him down by saying that he marched for black rights in the 60’s. You definitely don’t see that sort of thing these days.
It was funny watching through Ted Lasso this year. The first two seasons were tolerable. But then the third just shit the bed with wokeness. Almost every episode felt like “this time, on a very special episode of Ted Lasso …”. What was really funny was how toothless it simultaneously was. Like in the one that focused on homophobia, they actually censored out the word “faggot.” I remember back in the 90’s there was a special episode of A Different World about racism. In it, some white guys begin spray painting the word “nigger” on a black character’s car but get stopped partway. At the end of the episode, after everyone’s learned their lesson, they go back to the car and find someone finished the graffitti (signifying there’s still much to be done on the road to understanding; a great bookend to the story). These days, they wouldn’t even dare to show the start of word, let alone the full thing, and instead make allusions to the car being vandalized with something offensive (a dick? a swastika? the “ok” hand gesture?) to rob the message of its impact.
I remember when Liberals made it a point to read 1984 when Trump was elected. well, okay, they made it a point to take a selfie of themselves with the book in hand. It’s obvious they didn’t bother actually reading the book.
Don’t forget that this is CURRENT YEAR. So at least 80% of those unnecessary romance will be LGBT and/or interracial. Also “monster destroys city; women and LGBT most affected.” Oh, and I’ll put money on a tranny and/or black character remarking that “some people would consider ME to be a monster.”
The thing is, ever since Night of the Living Dead it’s been a given that the zombies don’t get explained or resolved. It’s hardly groundbreaking to do that shit, and yet people still think they’re blowing our minds by going that route.
It’s no big deal. Just like when Rolling Stone was found to be full of shit with their infamous campus rape story. It’s an easy pivot to “yes, but my lie reflects a greater truth.” As long as it “starts a conversation” it doesn’t matter they’ve no proof the thing they’re discussing is real. After all, if you’d dare deny systemic racism exists then they can dismiss you as speaking from a place of ignorant privilege.
I wonder how the suffragettes would respond to learning that their movement would devolve into celebrating baby murder.
