And they're incredibly comfortable at lying. They deny they did anything wrong, they deny what they did while they watch themselves do it on camera, they tell everyone they were arrested for no reason at all, and then they do it again! And when we do absolutely anything to defend ourselves, we're accused of bigotry.

It will never not stagger my mind because I just can't contemplate being that comfortable with lying, stealing or causing trouble for the sake of trouble.

And they probably keep a bare minimum of actual cash on hand.

Moral of the story: The judicial system punishes people who try to injure judges far more harshly than people who murder other people.

You can't just walk into a country with a long history of authoritarianism (especially with religious roots) and just expect them to become a democracy or representative republic overnight and then have first-world cultural sensibilities; even if the people want those things (or think they want it because of propaganda). The change needs to happen from within.

I suspect first-world leaders know this and use "freedom" as a dangling carrot when what they really want is to plunder the country for its resources and strategic significance.....or they became enriched by one of the factions and return the favor by helping the faction win a civil war.

You just reminded me of the video where a mother dragged her son away from the Baltimore riots. It's such a powerful thing that even the other rioters stayed away. I bet even the police wouldn't get in the way either; they'd probably just watch and smile. I never get tired of watching it.

I remember during the lockdowns when idiots would take to the streets to protest Trump despite being convinced it was very dangerous because of covid. They were literally prepared to die just to go outside to hold up a sign that read something like "orange man bad" for a few hours. Some even set their affairs in order and isolated for weeks before going. And when they came back alive with no cold or flu symptoms, they isolated for a few more weeks.
