I thought The Hunger Games series was pretty alright as far as dystopian novels go, even approaching based.
Best part is that happens during the execution of the former leader. Peasant girl is given her iconic bow and arrow to carry out the kill herself during a live broadcast, and instead of going ahead with it, realises le ebil white man wasn't responsible for the sister dying, [which should be noted: the sister being randomly picked for the actual Games at the very start of the story is why the peasant ends up volunteering to do it instead; to protect the very sister "her side" ends up killing for what amounts to war propaganda and virtue signalling], so she turns around and shoots the new woman leader.
Plain Jane is actually a marysue and can't choose between the gentle hunk or the aggressive hunk
I didn't say it was perfect, but the world building was neat
I did enjoy the books.
Dystopia written by a man: A nobody in the grand scheme of things struggles to get by in a tyrannical regime which is slowly but surely choking the life and spirit out of humanity.
Dystopia written by a woman: A woman who is the bestest at everything can't decide which of two (or more) hunky guys she likes more while she leads the rebellion against the regime.

If you're a fan of 1984, take a look at "We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin.
You can actually just make a branching story for the target markets:
A brutal fascistic government is oppressing the common people. A rich and powerful inner member of the government knocks on the protagonist's door.
Male ending: He's here to audit you for corrupt reasons. You are likely to die soon, so you must take flight, and survive in the corrupt wasteland alone.
Female ending: He's hopelessly in love with you, as is the shirtless muscular rebel leader, but while you'll sleep with both of them, only one can be your true love!
Neither have enough sex based on the books I've read.
