You can tell some of the team genuinely wanted to make a good game (Tony Todd as Venom is an excellent cast) but it's got so much SJW agenda baggage built into it sucks the fun right out. I don't have high hopes for Wolverine.
Spiderman PS4 literally only succeeded on being modern and fancy. It looked good, felt good to play, and was otherwise inoffensive in most ways. If you got it for 20-30$ its a pretty solid weekend binge game.
So they replaced the face model people grew attached to with a "its totally coincidence it looks like his MCU actor" one that is shockingly unfitting for Peter Parker, doubled down on the segments people hated from the first one, pushed dual protag status with a character people are already burnt out on, and then basically made the same fucking game beyond that.
Like, ignoring the woke parts, it was already probably going to struggle. It might have kept some momentum from the first game, but the Miles midquel already proved that had little power, and they seemed more interested in marketing it to Execs and Journalists than generating any amount of hype for it.
Surprising no one, a franchise that went with sweet-baby-style initiatives wound up losing a significant amount of projected earnings. Or in short, go woke, go broke.
They ruined themselves just to push the message. Even less people are going to play a hypothetical Marvel's Spider-Man 3 after the shit they did. And the first was a fucking system seller.
"Insomniac's Wolverine," starring Man-Jaw Grey is going to fail. They'll focus entirely on Spider-Man 3 after that, but having learned nothing, they'll sell half what 2 did or less, while they probably spend even more on the game. And the "mainstream" coverage will use every excuse in the book EXCEPT "atrociously woke themes/disrespected the material and audience."

I don’t think we can safely say it underperformed, but the game definitely diminished Insomniac’s reputation. Not even the casuals were impressed by the game. It was a bland, “safe” sequel.
Butcher Bay is better than the movie it was licensed from, probably the foundation of all "melee oriented FPS" games, and shockingly forgotten by time despite still holding up.
Genuinely one of my favorite games, and a great lesson that you just need a little extra money and one of the production staff to give a little of a shit about the game to make it special.

I hear it's right up there with GoldenEye and Escape from Butcher Bay as one of the best movie licensed games.
