Modern journalism: USA Today - "Your 12-foot skeleton is scaring neighborhood dogs, who don't know what Halloween is" (archive.ph)

There was a bit of controversy over Halloween decorations in my local subreddit recently. A recently arrived African immigrant was freaking out over a Halloween display that had a skeleton with a noose and blaming it on "racist Trump supporters." I don't have any decorations up, but these miserable hall monitors are tempting me.

Put out a skeleton with a burnt tire around its neck and a missing thigh bone, see if they start blaming the Haitians for that one.

r/ThatHappened.

Like BandageBandolier said, a fresh-off-the-boat African immigrant would be more familiar with a necklacing than a noose.

Nah I believe it. If there's anything these recent invaders have in common it's that none of them wash their hands and all of them know the magic gimme words. Most of them can't even tell you what state they've been injected into but every one I've come across can call things rayciss.

At this point I'm just about positive that there's a customized briefing packet being handed out.

Halloween decorations are really getting on my nerves lately and I like Halloween. There are multiple houses nearby that have giant (10 feet or so) tall skeletons in their yard. Sounds cool right? I thought so too. During October. Multiple houses have left them out all year. All fucking year giant human skeletons littering the neighborhood. Quickly moved from a cool decoration to an eyesore.

There was one guy like that in my old neighborhood. He lived near a busy road and decorated his skeleton for other holidays, like a red beard and green hat for St Patrick's day. I liked it, but if I had a whole neighborhood of them that would get old fast.

Halloween decorations have a very narrow line to walk to stay outside of cringe.

In one instance, a dog Richter knew attacked a neighbor who jumped out from behind a bush to scare the dog's family.

And everyone learned an important lesson.

But no, dogs are not scared of giant plastic bones. If anything, they are disappointed they are not real.

One sniff and they're like "Okay, whatever this is, it's boring and I don't get it."

Seriously. Dog thought his humans were under attack and defended his pack.

Reminds me of that dog that attacked a burglar a few years ago while the homeowner was out. There was blood sprayed on the walls and they never did find the guy. The dog looked so damn proud of himself.

I have dog -- why people bring their mutts on Halloween or to 4th July or new years... Many pet owners are so stupid I'm thankful they don't have kids

If you move to a new country wouldn’t it be a good thing to learn about the customs and traditions of the country you have moved to?

Not if you plan on being a welfare parasite and a rapist.

In fact, your dog doesn't even know what Halloween is.

Can I get a fact-check on that?

My dog definitely knows. I've researched this in controlled conditions. I ask him what noise a ghost makes and he replies "Woooooo." This is entirely spontaneous and in no way involved a shit ton of treats and a wasted afternoon.

I asked my Husky about Halloween and he said:

AOOWRA RA RA WOR ROOOW WAAR ROW WOR WOR ROO WOR WOR ARR AR ARR ARRGOOWRGO ARH ROW GRAH HARWH RAR! RAR! RAR!... WROOOOOOWORRROWROW ROW ROW ROW ROW ROW ARRGHHRRUUUU RUR RUOW WORGHHFF

At least, that's what I managed to get for the first 30 seconds. I only asked him one question. It's been 5 hours of this.

There are likely several thousand small dogs that will have varying reactions to the sight of a Halloween pet costume.
The ones that run away know the true nature of women Halloween.

The usual suspects have been trying to get rid of Halloween just like they have been warring on Christmas. Sadly, they may have succeeded with Halloween.

Trunk or Treat is goyification of the holiday, resist it. And nigs carpooling around White neighborhoods makes people less excited to be out walking and give out big candy. Halloween works by having a tight knit neighborhood that loves to show spirit and looks out for each other first and formost.

Have two bowls to give out candy, one with punk stuff for sheeboons driving un-costumed kids around, and one bowl for kids enjoying American culture.

Didn't know about the nigs but that doesn't surprise me. The trunk or treat crap is a real problem. Lots of soccer mom control freak types force that onto their kids and neighborhoods.

Care meter low. If your dog doesn't like my house, walk him somewhere else.

I'll compromise and talk it out with my actual neighbors out of mutual respect we have for one another, anyone else can go fuck themselves.

And I bet USA Today doesn't know what Samhain is or even how it's pronounced so they can fuck right off trying to lecture other people about modern practices of my culture.

Edit: quoting myself from a year ago.

Dear WaPo and your ilk, Samhain says go fuck yourself.

The only thing a dog would feel upon seeing 12-foot-long bones is mild confusion. They're far more scent-based than vision-based. There's that famous clip of a person in a giant horror monster costume, questioning their dog, "does this not frighten you? Are you not concerned?" as the dog is just staring at what they can smell to be their owner apparently in some weird outfit, just chilling.

Honestly idc. Halloween is a stupid consooomer holiday that has successfully replaced Christmas. Its all of the consoooming and none of the family values.

Very American, let's watch the Republicans all fall in line to defend their new retarded holiday from the "libs".

No it isn't. It's either wanting to pee on it or pull it down. Or both. "Journalist" Claire Thornton needs to get a grip and go back to tending her many cats.
