As someone who loves orcs and goblins this kills me. I’ve played 5th edition for years and virtually never fight orcs. At this point if they show up in a game I assume it’ll be followed by “but there not the bad orcs they just keep to themselves and sometimes we trade with them”. Oh wow things are really fucking tense now! No evil raiders but guys you sometime buy esty art from! How exciting!!
And I get to smash these creatures en masse with a +5 battleaxe?

Kinda tangential but this evokes the same feeling I got with Gothic. Not sure if anyone here played that series. In the first game they do have a primitive religion but they are basically stupid tribals just a step above dumb animals. By the third game they are an advanced race just like any other civilization and strong enough to defeat humanity and you can do missions for them.
Of course Warcraft kind of went and ruined the orcs first in WoW, but at least they still looked like fearsome monsters.

The Warcraft comment actually does remind me that a fair portion of how Orcs have commonly been portrayed has more in common with the Mongol invasions than what the left has been claiming for the past decade.

I thought orcs were an allegory for the chavs and cockneys who confounded even a life long english ear with their speaking and slang. As if they were an alien race who assumed the form of the locals to try and blend in, but they never could get the language right.
For awhile they were even pig-like in appearance. With tusks and snouts. This was back when kobolds were furred creatures.
Tolkien had them as sort of like mushroom people. They would lay a sort of pod person into the ground, and later when they're full grown, they pop up ready to go.
Warcraft had them as aliens from another planet who finally freed themselves from indentured servitude.
Now they're just a gay brown people allegory. That's not only boring, it's lame.
For warhammer they were based on the soccer hooligans, but I'm not sure about DnD. Probably Gary's bad neighbors.
