I love Google's absolutely fucking inept censorship.
My favorite example is that you can still to this very day buy a "Confederate fla" on Google Shopping, but not a "Confederate Flag." The latter returns zero results.
Your search - confederate flag - did not match any shopping results.
Suggestions: Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
HAHAHAHAHA.
Anyway, why do I bring this up? If you click the Google link to "Usage examples" you get this:
"the election turned out to be a bloodbath for their party"
"the bad publicity would be a media bloodbath"
There were other nonmetaphorical examples, of course, but those two are clearly not actual bloody bloodbaths.
Sadly I haven't been to the South myself yet, so I can't really help there, lol. Though I feel like even parts of Queensland over here would have had their share of "rebel flag bikinis", even fairly recently...
But I'll let you know if I ever see/hear of one in person again, ha.
Hahaha, is it the "feminists can't change anything" shirt?
Also, it's weird, most of the results aren't for women changing lightbulbs. I checked with men, and most of the results are about men changing lightbulbs. Someone with their finger on the scale again, I suppose.
is it the "feminists can't change anything" shirt?
It wasn't when I last checked when making that post, it was the "How many men" version that comes after it from Pinterest, although some results may differ I guess.
Now it's the feminist t-shirt and the men version in second.
I don't have too much of a horse in this race, given that I'm not American, but I do find it weird that we've gone from even hippies liking Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers band, and the Dukes of Hazzard being culturally ubiquitous, to, in less than two decades (since the Hazzard remake) that flag being so supposedly "racist" that it is pretty much a "cultural no-no" almost everywhere, not just in polite society, and even Mississippi had to tear down their state flag...
Not to mention the whole tearing down statues shit that only really made its way into the West (and has now even reached my home city, depressingly) after Trump won, and the left declared open war on society as it stood...
At the same time, I would argue that "racial harmony" has gone completely backwards, people hate each other more than ever, and "violence" only seems to be increasing, along with the obvious political polarization...
Same thing happened in England with the British and English flags. Same in Australia (since 2005 in particular) with the Australian flag and the Eureka cross/flag. And arguably same in NZ with their flag... And the statues shit has carried through to all these places, plus Canada, plus even Central Europe of all places...
Sometimes people get treated worse than Hitler. They'll (in this case Amazon) ban books (I think Jordan Peterson, various "Covid denialism," among others?) while still selling Mein Kampf. You think the government response to Covid was atrocious? You're literally worse than Hitler!
Huh, apparently they did briefly ban Mein Kampf for a second, then brought it back.
Amazon has reportedly banned the sale of most editions of Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” after decades of lobbying from Jewish groups...
Trump really should just sit there and read a dictionary out loud so these people will never be able to use a word again because Trump also used said word, and that'd be very bad.
They're literally doing the Hitler breathed air and drank water routine with words and it's not even the most retarded thing I've seen lately.
Trump really should just sit there and read a dictionary out loud
Dude, I'd pay to see that. Trump going off on tangents while reading the dictionary would be one of the most on-brand things he could do. And could you imagine when he get's to "Insurrection," or "Impeachment," or so many others?
Didn't he make people support Nickleback after he criticised them in some way? This is despite the fact everyone shits on Nickleback, so much like Dr Cox in Scrubs needing to start an argument with Kelso that time Cox stopped fighting with his wife, TDS is so bad for these idiots they must go against long running memes like there being no actual fans of Nickleback.
If he manages to thread the needle again on day one Trump should start anti-trust break up lawsuits against Alphabet Inc (Google, Youtube, DoubleClick) and Facebook (Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp).
Who gives a rat's ass about how google defines anything?
Politically neutral lexicography ended sometime in the late 1960's-early '70s, which is why my only lexicon other than the OED or an etymological dictionary is the Random House American College Dictionary, copyright 1969.
Comparing definitions in the same dictionary from different decades or editions is a good exercise, a good way to see how politics infiltrates lexicography.
Citing dictionaries in arguments over definitions is a lame appeal to authority.
The screenshots shown suggest they switched to a different dictionary source (dictionary.com to "Oxford Languages").
For my part, I don't know how I feel about dictionaries including metaphorical meanings among their definitions. I imagine printed dictionaries would swell up if they did.

Yup, and I checked, it has been that single definition for years. But Google switching what they're using in this case, at this time, is still absolutely shit-teir behavior. You have to go down pretty dang far to even find it, too. You pass Merriam-Webster, Dictionary, Cambridge, Vocabulary, Collins, Britannica, and more. All of these include either non-literal definitions or at least examples. You have to bypass all that to get to what Google is currently using. That's intentional, and it's malicious.
No matter how you feel about metaphorical definitions, Google is pulling a fast one here, for vicious and political means.
I was going to mention that too. In order to get the definition they did, they had to skip at least eight other far more reputable sources for the word.
To put this in easier terms, they're a half a step from using urban dictionary as an actual dictionary source when they have to dig this deep.
That’s pretty much their SOP. Once the election is over or this narrative drops from the spotlight they’ll switch back to whichever source supports the current narrative.
also, did the original poster happen to post an archive?
I couldn't find one, sadly.
Also, doing some testing, it looks like Google is using Oxford for everything now. Not sure when that happened, or why. The format in the image (where it puts the link to the dictionary used) is/was a valid one, but that doesn't prove anything one way or the other. Archiving should be standard practice. Also, I wish Twitter/"X" wasn't so bent on inconveniencing people who aren't signed in. I haven't used Twitter in years, I don't remember my password, and I think I'd have to do some weird phone verification if I tried to reset it anyway. I don't want to sign in to Twitter, but that means I can't read shit.
I know I'm tangenting, but it's really weird how locked down Twitter is now. I get smaller sites having to do that to save bandwidth, but it feels super clunky and cheap when a big name site does it. Inconvenient for people trying to use Twitter to promote themselves, too, as a lot of people do. You want people without accounts to be able to see your stuff easily. So this shit hurts both people with and without accounts.

I miss southern girls in confederate flag bikinis.
That's still a thing, right?? Even if it's harder to find on the internet, surely that culture still exists, no?
I doubt girls like that give a shit what TPTB think, and it's not like they're doing anything actually illegal, anyway!
That sounds really bad to do, where? No really, where so I can avoid it :)
Sadly I haven't been to the South myself yet, so I can't really help there, lol. Though I feel like even parts of Queensland over here would have had their share of "rebel flag bikinis", even fairly recently...

Do an image search on Google for: How many women does it take to change a lightbulb?
No quotations marks, just the words and punctuation at the end, and see what the first image result is.
Hahaha, is it the "feminists can't change anything" shirt?

I don't even get the t-shirt unless I open google search in a private tab
the flag example works even from russian IP, that is hilarious
it even does "did you mean: confederate flag" if you don't type g in, and that leads to "did not match any shopping results" page
poor search ai is forced into a loop

Really makes you wonder...
They are still doing this to Kyle Rittenhouse too. No results, but insert a space there somewhere and see plenty of merch.
He gets the same treatment as Adolf Hitler. But of course, Stalin works just fine on Google's platform.

Trump gets to "Abomination"
Media: "THAT'S TRANSPHOBIC!"
The "Defamation" tangent would cost him another couple hundred million dollars.
Wait until he gets to the Rs ...
Mostly bloodless baths.
so how does this gel with the theory that Jews are going to let Trump win because he's useful to Israel?
Obviously he's the shabbiest goy, but the circus we're seeing is just to get the population fighting amongst themselves. Divide and conquer.

Trump should campaign on this. “I’m so powerful I can change the definitions of words. No, it’s true! Watch me!”
Didn't he make people support Nickleback after he criticised them in some way? Clearly Nickelback has, and always has had, some fans, otherwise the Rockstar video clip wouldn't exist, lol...
But I still see your point.
If he manages to thread the needle again on day one Trump should start anti-trust break up lawsuits against Alphabet Inc (Google, Youtube, DoubleClick) and Facebook (Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp).

Feelings on that aside, if they just switched it now, they're clearly doing it on purpose for shit reasons.
Personally though, I prefer all common usages of a word be listed.
Printed dictionaries of any merit have always included metaphorical meanings for words like this, though. That's why they have value.
That's... Almost the whole point of why I have the coffee table-sized, 15-year-old one that I do, for precisely that reason...
As long as it sold more ads.
it looks like it was dictionary.com, since that's what those results are pulling from.
