Nintendo has actually been innovative in successful ways, has kept their tech cheap, and their games, at times, FUN. Sony moved PlayStation HQ to America, where it went full politically-correct police on everything, ESPECIALLY the Japanese devs making cute girls doing cute things stuff. Microsoft never had that fun Japanese touch, period, and simply tried to buy up whatever they could to attempt monopolization.
Nintendo and PC (mostly Steam) is the future.
There really needs to be a book about Nintendo as a business. The problem is it will be named Nintendo and the Mob. Who wants to get their suicide note written for them because they started the book?
Meh, if the mob is what's keeping Nintendo cranking out quality products then I say it's fine to turn a blind eye to the mob because it's been a force for good.
It's all about slant. The mob loves stories about how the mob is cool and with the current trendy fashions and competent and skilled. And compared to the dangerhairs at Sony and the diversity hires of Xbox, they certainly are more competent and skilled.
Also, the fact that the limitations imposed by the Switch's hardware forces developers to be more judicious and smart with how to spend resources. Of course, at a certain point, too weak is too weak and the Switch is quite outdated now. However, the fact it could run games like Xenoblade 2 & 3, BOTW & TOTK, and Dragon Quest XI S is impressive.
From what the rumors suggest, the Switch 2 will have Xbox Series S-like performance with DLSS. Obviously still weak raw performance-wise, but the higher baseline will help a lot.
I could believe it. My boss is a Japanese dude with 3 kids from ages 7 to 13. I laughed my ass off when he told me they have 3 switches, one for each kid.
Nintendo was smart to bring back LAN play. Any parent who has the dosh to buy a couple for the kids and put games like Mario Kart on them has a great road trip device that keeps everyone equally engaged.
A brilliant little move no doubt, but Nintendo has always preferred local multiplayer, and that's always been a big selling point for most families, and one of the reasons I always preferred Nintendo products over the others.
Local multiplayer is also huge for Japan's love of public transportation and most people commuting to work.
It's almost like being kind to your customers, instead of viewing them as a captive audience to be milked and propagandized, actually makes people want to buy your products.
I'm not disagreeing about the indie part, but Nintendo is way more than Branding. They are some of the best game designers in the world.
Everything going more PC got the fanboys crying?
Or that there has been NO good exclusives since the new consoles released?
Why would you buy a console anyway?
Previously easy to play in living room, low barrier to entry.
Nowadays, a lot of the benefits have been lost due to censorship bullshit. Only one left is probably Nintendo thanks to the iron grip on their IPs that are still good.
Since Steam and Big Picture Mode compatibility became more optimised, most consoles even lost out on this little advantage. I learned this first hand when I bought a PS4 years ago, and soon after bought a high-end gaming rig. It took the PS4 like close to a minute to cold boot and my gaming rig as quick as 19 seconds to cold boot. Also you couldn't access any games when an update had to take place, and sometimes those updates were huge and slow.
Some years ago I remember I had to wait close to an hour for the PS4 to do some massive update and I couldn't do anything while it was going through that lengthy OS process. I had my gaming rig on in seconds, my Xbox controller plugged into the front of the PC like a console, and was playing Super Indie Karts on the large-screen TV while waiting for the PS4 system and game(s) to finish updating. It was at that point that I realised that the new consoles were more cumbersome to use than my gaming PC.
The Switch has near instantaneous boot times (it's faster than it takes HDMI to sync with my receiver and projector) and most games, particularly first-party titles, have trivial load times. The OS hypervisor is also instantaneously responsive.
It was one of the things that surprised me the most about the Wii U -- the boot time was awful and the home screen was painfully slow.
Also, who cold boots their PC? Sleep, or at least hibernate.
Sometimes I will go months at a time without using the gaming rig. So it doesn't make sense to have it idling; plus I don't want Windows running updates in the background (I occasionally have to go in and manually disable all of the auto-updates in the registry). It literally just has games on it and is hooked up to the TV; no keyboard, no mouse.
As for the Switch -- I love it for the reasons you just named. It really does have instantaneous boot times and most games load pretty quickly. There are a few titles with poorly optimised loading (usually Unity and UE4 titles), but that's the nature of general purpose game engines. Otherwise, you're spot on that the Switch is fast, fun, and very accessible.
I've had games that HARD CRASH my PC after five minutes, play perfectly without issue on the console version.
Convenience matters.
The old argument was:
You get better hardware than what you pay for during the first one or two years.
It’s simpler. No installing. No patches. Minimal technical issues.
Both of these points have gone away.
If you could even buy them in the first place. A lot of Sonys woes are due to the scalpers making buying a PS5 a chore. Now though? You can buy them but they never made any games. Could also be due to the low amount of people buying said new games. Oh wonder, people probably gave up trying to get one, kind of a vicious circle.
After my PS3 died because of the heat-overload issue, I never really wanted another console, even though they make the best home-theater idea as a media player (CD/DVD/Blue-Ray) simply because you can also multipurpose it as a game-system.
Other than that, I see no real reason to buy a console in the first place as you can do everything with a PC box ... and most likely easier with a PC box ...
I miss my FAT ps3, was my first console I myself owned(I usually shared with family members before), died due to overheating also.
Favourite game was SSX on the PS3. Played that the most.
Loved RDR, sadly can ONLY be played on PS3, emulation's just not there yet last I checked.
Same here. You could cook an egg on it, though, and they were louder than a jet engine.
Not many people care about it these days, but to actually own your games. Since le PC master race sold their consumer rights for a copy of HL2 20 years ago, physical console games are almost the only option.
GOG's library of recent AA/AAA games is growing but still very lacking.
I can't stand console players whining about a lack of console exclusives. Console exclusives is the least healthy way to maintain a console market.
Additionally, one of the biggest reasons why I think consoles are getting screwed so hard is the lack of splitscreen support from any new games for years now.
It's mixed on that front.
If the company fronted the cash, resources for development and distribution of that game, then they can make it a first party exclusive its their right.
But if it's buying out a studio to THEN make it exclusive, that's just scummy. Especially if it's a timed exclusive.
It's the later, for me. Most of the games I wanted were still available on old gen anyway, so there wasn't a compelling need to upgrade. Now that both Microsoft and Sony are pushing digital only, I don't see the appeal of sticking with consoles.
I know PC players are only increasing these days, but some of my best memories were forged playing with friends on consoles. It's sad that kids nowadays don't have the same opportunity.
Mine too, but split screen is dead.
Halo: MCC on Xbox One has split screen somehow. I was blown away when I found out
There's no culture of split screen now though. When I was a kid we used to get a bunch of us together at a friend's house and spend all afternoon playing Golden Eye or Mario Kart. It's a very different experience from online play and I think it did a lot to create social bonds, which the modern world seems to facilitate less and less as time goes on.
PC Master Race confirmed.
There isn’t a PlayStation 5 anyway. Just a $570 remake of Demon’s Souls.
The upgraded Gran Turismo you mean?
I read years ago that consoles would all eventually converge into PCs and I didn't really believe it.
All you have to do is make a game system that has fun games you can't get on any other system and people will buy it. That's the whole secret, you just make games people want to play and put it on a system that can play them. Somehow Nintendo is the only hardware company left that understands this.
Yamauchi, then president of Nintendo, said that the NES was a box to play Mario on.
Is Xbox John Cena?
All I can say to that is, give me fucking Bloodborne on the PC, you water-brained cowards.
I can give you Bloodborne on PC, but it has to have a chick in it, and be lame & gay.
Give it a few years, they just revolutionized PS2 emulation and PS3 is getting up off the ground, we'll get to PS4 quickly enough, probably even faster with how often PS4 titles got ported to pc
Nep-nep is waiting in Gameindustri for all her goddess friends who cast her down low to come back.
