I could believe it. My boss is a Japanese dude with 3 kids from ages 7 to 13. I laughed my ass off when he told me they have 3 switches, one for each kid.
Nintendo was smart to bring back LAN play. Any parent who has the dosh to buy a couple for the kids and put games like Mario Kart on them has a great road trip device that keeps everyone equally engaged.
A brilliant little move no doubt, but Nintendo has always preferred local multiplayer, and that's always been a big selling point for most families, and one of the reasons I always preferred Nintendo products over the others.

Local multiplayer is also huge for Japan's love of public transportation and most people commuting to work.
