Ethan Hawke felt 'so comfortable' directing daughter Maya Hawke's sex scenes in their new film (archive.ph)

... Why did we need to know this?

So you can learn that it’s totes normal for parents and children to engage in sexual activity. Don’t you want to be progressive like the Hollywood elites?

In addition to starring as O'Connor, Maya also plays six different characters from the author's short stories that are depicted in the film. It's those roles that required her to perform in some intimate scenes – which were, of course, overseen by her father.

Holy Vanity Project Batman!

Amazing how he funded this abortion of a film for his daughter. I bet in the same breath he'll say how she 'never got any advantages'

I’ve read the Complete Stories.

I like O’Connor’s writing. (Except for “The Life You Save May Be Your Own”, which I think everyone had to read in high school, and which I think is her worst story.)

I do not recall any sex scenes, or scenes of intimacy, in any of her stories.

Right there with you, good stories. I think the most memorable to me is the tattoo one (I'm forgetting the name). A Good Man is Hard to Find also.

Likewise, I don't remember any sex scenes...

Hot take: I don't like sex scenes in movies.

I only realized this since they started cramming all the homoerotic stuff into movies and TV, which as a heterosexual, obviously grosses me out.

But it got me thinking about equivalent hetererotic scenes and I realized...I don't like them either.

Usually they're just cringe, if not actually gross, and at best they're unnecessary. It's not like the details of a sex scene ever advance the plot or develop character so they're just masterbatory. They're always trying to make sex look good, which it objectively doesn't, because that's all they can do in a visual medium. Porn works because the viewer is only there for masterbation, but I'm not going to whip anything out for 5 minutes of lip sucking under a blanket any time soon.

I don't mind sexy characters, or even explicit fan sevice if it doesn't get in the way, but if the movie properly sets up the context that leads to two characters having sex, I don't see the point of lingering over the act itself.

I think a lot of directors and actors want to be in porn, but not have the stigma of being in porn. Because those long, unnecessary sex scenes ARE porn, just with careful bribes and camera angles to make it airable.

Because if they wanted to just add titillation, there's much better ways to do it. Easy ways, too: Costumes, camera angles in action (or even passive) shots, character traits, many ways to entice the audience, that can be done at the same time as plot progression, saving the audience's time and the film's budget.

Agreed.

I honestly can't think of any sex scene that was actually necessary to the film, series, or heck even a book. Maybe if there's some sort of plot device involved, but I can't recall any in any consumptive media that I've experienced over the years; usually it's there for titillation purposes and has nothing to do with character development or story progression.

Though, if I'm wrong, I'm sure someone more inclined and well versed in the media arts will correct me.

I generally agree.

I don't even think there was an explicit sex scene, but they did use sexy scenes to set some of the back story in The Nice Guys, where one of the characters was a porn star.

Other than that, occasionally sex scenes set the stage well if the tone of the movie is strange enough. Ninth Gate (by pedophile satanist whatever Roman Polanski) had a sex scene that worked within the film due to the overall tone.

Basically, if a movie is going for a specific weird tone, sometimes sex scenes fit that tone but, in general, sex scenes are completely unnecessary and usually counterproductive cringe.

It’s become cringey anymore, it used to be “exciting” because it was new, then got vastly overused to the point it became dull.

Unfortunately this seems to be a normal phenomenon for today's fathers, as talked about on numerous blog including here and at Dalrock's. Lots of fathers are perfectly fine with their daughters being sexual. They are just pimps, not fathers.

Everything is OK if you are really nice about it and bring in a special lib grifter. For example, Israelis know that bombing Gaza might seem a little weird to the Palestinians, but they wanted to take care of them, so they brought in a genocide coordinator. Everyone on set was really respectful and understanding.

The real disturbing part is that this is virtue signaling in this day and age.

Think on that. He's saying this for progressive good boy points. That's worrying, probably more than that he said it.

Men have no social power nowadays to come down and tell their daughters 'stop acting like a whore'.

If they do, they get crucified. Even by other men.

Men aren't stupid - even soycucks. So they try and twist it around and mumble something about female empowerment and do everything possible to ignore the fact that the little girl they spent all that time nurturing and growing is going to end up a wasted and abused whore.

For good boy points.

If I ever have kids, having a daughter is not on my list of things to do.

Dario Argento also put his daughter, Asia Argento in sex scenes. It's a good thing she turned out just fine!
