It sucks that the best way to enjoy a lot of games from the past decade is to learn Japanese well enough to understand it since they put the option for Japanese audio in all the games from there. Wouldn't be needed if the localizers weren't a rabid bunch of communist losers.

It's really jarring when the "localizer" clearly put Western SJW lingo and mindset into the mouth of the characters.

And it pisses me when they changed bits of phrases or farewell/hello/introductions lines "because it fits the character / context better" and it fucking dosen't.

You're 100% correct on this. Truth isn't relevant to them, power is. Talking heads on Youtube waisted everyone's time with cringe compilations and "essays" while these people quietly took over everything from behind and simply locked us out. They won because they were ruthless and understood that the only rule that matters is the one that lets you win.

debates a waste of time

Debates that aren't about major safety hazards are not worth having. There is almost always a clear objective truth on one side and then there is the opposition that wants something that is harmful and dangerous to come about regardless of the cost. The opposition always proceeds to use emotional manipulation to assert its dominance over the uncomfortable but necessary truth. This inevitably leads to a lot of unnecessary suffering, with the end result being that the opposition says "oopsies, nobody could have foreseen the disastrous outcomes of our policies" while the silenced truthsayers are foaming at the mouth in the background. The opposition proceeds to collect their bonus checks and T-shirts and disappear into the fog.

Not enough space for a PS2 era text translation

PS2 was a DVD-based system

Something doesn't add up there.

"They're vicious when we notice"

Look at them being vicious when we notice.

Jesus Christ, you didn't have to prove them platinum level right like that. But there it is.

This would be easier to believe if these weren’t the kind of people who would call the censoring of gay characters from Japanese media back in the day “queer erasure.”

Localizers used to censor things that the left now supports. The difference is that almost nobody pretended censorship wasn’t happening if confronted with the question.

What we have now are people who will lie to your face as they replace original text with political agenda.

Elder Scrolls Oblivion is famous for that in Germany.
"Star. Tr. d. Le.en.-W." or in English: "strong potion of healing"

Not to mention the Japs use Kanji, which is a single character space symbol but is 5 full words in English to get the same point across.

Which is gaslighting again since Japanese is notorious for needing more space than English.

Speedrunners use Japanese versions due to Japanese being faster with text (less characters per word). So your argument makes 0 sense

So let's take your comment:

Speedrunners use Japanese versions due to Japanese being faster with text (less characters per word).

and Google translate it to Japanese:

Speedrunners では、日本語の方がテキストが速い (単語あたりの文字数が少ない) ため、日本語版を使用します

As you can see, the Japanese version is longer.

Potentially more cart-space because Japanese has a larger character set, but not more screen-space because, unsurprisingly, when you have characters that are entire words, it takes fewer of them to convey a message.

Space limitations is a real actual issue in the translation market, and not one localizers made up.

Because the Japanese will make UIs with space for, let's say, 190 characters per screen. Because of Kanji they can easily shove an entire paragraph into that space, but in any other language they will have to find some way to make it still fit and get all the relevant information in despite needing like 500 characters to properly translate that bit. Its the same with background signs and such.

This requires an extreme level of skill and creativity to work around while still getting all the necessary information in, and is the reason why it used to be such a high skill job.

Now localizers know this, and completely use it as an excuse every chance they get because its an actual thing they know can kinda cover for them even when its completely unrelated to why they did what they did. Which is why its such an insidious position they have.

My understanding is that this sort of space constraint is why Secret of Mana's narrative is so simplified in western releases.

That argument may have been the case in early NES/SNES.

The way Japanese written language works is its allows you to represent a single word with a kanji or syllables with Hiragana or Katakana.

English on the other hand has the limit of one symbol representing one letter.

Final Fantasy spells like Flare were フレア or フレアー so 4 character limit wasn't a problem. Translators however had to get creative because FLAR sounded off so they had to go with NUKE instead.

Similar thing happened with FF6 where Ultima Weapon could be fitted in 8 character limit: アルテマウェポン. Once again translators had to improvise and go with AtmaWepn which later morphed into Atma Weapon leading many thinking it to be something else than Ultima Weapon.

I refuse to believe a line of text would EVER be deleted for the sake of storage space. You'd need to remove your brain and install a leftist one to be able to make that connection. A line of text would be... a handful of kilobytes of data at the most

Old localizers did stuff like in Ar Tonelico 2 where NISA introduced a 100% reproducible game crashing bug because they literally tried jamming more data in than it could take, causing an overflow. Every time one particular attack was used. Oh yeah, it was a scripted battle and you had to skip the entire phase theiugh shitting out more damage than intended or tou get hard locked in battle. New ones aren't THAT open with their contempt and lack of respect or care.

I actually dodged that glitch in my normal playthrough. Luckily, the scripted event is Replakia-enabled, so you can just overcharge your spells to ~100,000% power. Which personally, I thought was the way the game was meant to be played. Hence at the game end, "How... do we deal with this dragon?" "Replakia."
