I vaguely remembered these films and couldn't recall any of them outside of the original so I ruined the last five evenings by watching them.
Turns out the same guy wrote all 5 of them. He directed the first three but you can tell as he got more freedom the woke shit began multiplying.
The arc is actually incredibly stupid if you take a moment to think about it. The original was successful for one reason: it was a basic 'home invasion' film with an interesting concept to set the film in motion.
That interesting concept is why people came and checked out what is essentially a soulless copy paste of a plot. It is the SOLE REASON for the success of the entire series.
This must have pissed off the writer because every sequel he chips away at that interesting concept, making it lamer and lamer. Instead of film sequels that add onto the mythology he manages to destroy it and make it all less interesting each film, which in itself is astonishingly arrogant of the writer.
So Purge 1: watchable but is the usual white = bad guy black = good guy. Purge 2: Minorities everywhere, purge more about race and less about social status, white guy still bad. Purge 3: election purge, meaning all about white guys in politics, white woman in politics = savior.
I'm going to take a moment here to point out what is by far the most annoying thing about Purge 3: it is set in Staten Island NYC. That place is like 90% white Italian guys. Even now it is by far the majority. It is the whitest area of NYC and the fact that they set the Purge 3 in Staten Island is actually believable because that place is a shithole. What is NOT believable is that you have 50-80 black gang characters who all hang out with black people in black establishments in STATEN FUCKING ISLAND. Holy shit it was so sad to see, the writer is either a true hack and didn't even look up the demographics or didn't give a shit.
Also in Purge 3 all the black gang members end up being the good guys and are only helping the community and each other which is a hilarious cope. This guy is writing his delusions into his films. Funnily enough Purge 3 ends with the white savior female politician winning the election (of course) and banning the Purge.
Writer fucked up and wrote himself into a corner right? Nope, PREQUAL TIME! But at least they don't let the same hack who wrote/directed the first 3 direct again, so they get a black guy with basically no experience to 'direct' it.

"The First Purge" is really just painful to sit through. It totally destroys the entire concept of the Purge making all three original films pointless and stupid. It tries to show black people as kind and nonviolent and the Government Nazi far right exclusively white goons as the 'purgers' and essentially blame the entire thing on Republicans. It is BAD.
But what comes next is something awe inspiring.

"The Forever Purge". If you showed me this film and didn't tell me it was the same writer I'd tell you it is satire mocking the first four films. It is so amazingly over the top, so incredibly stupid, so unbelievably woke...everything is so bad that it feels intentionally done like a mockumentary of the entire series.
Everyone should watch this movie (don't pay a fucking cent for it). It really is a pinnacle of just how terrible and woke horror films can get. There are so many tremendously huge plot holes in it that I can't even begin to list them. It's one of the worst things I've ever seen.
Don't watch this series, but if you do watch The Forever Purge and marvel at just how low a film can sink.
Our media is a deliberate and malicious inversion of our observable reality. Everyone knows that blacks are by far the most violent major racial demographic in the country, followed by Hispanics, with whites a distant third. But we all have to pretend that whites are the most dangerous while blacks are 100% peaceful and blameless victims. It’s some serious 1984-level denial of reality, and that isn’t an exaggeration.
My favorite statistics involve home ownership and schools. Everyone with money buys houses in mostly white neighborhoods and sends their kids to mostly white private schools. These are the most important decisions most people will ever make in their entire lives, and they choose to be utterly immersed in and surrounded by “whiteness”. The American Dream is literally making enough money to escape from black people.
But we all have to pretend that the exact polar opposite is the truth. It’s insanity. And it’s not sustainable.
And increasingly from other diversity. I've seen "first line" suburbs get taken over by Asians, and white people don't wanna live there any more. Nothing wrong with Asians; they are just different and also prefer their own.
Asians are probably the most racist ethnic group on the planet
I worked with a Chinese woman and can confirm. She was also racist against another Chinese woman who worked there.
Right, yeah, they definitely have their own thing going on (which I find inferior, too), and given the choice between white neighbors and their own kind, they prefer their own kind. I guess by nothing wrong I just meant that they don't have the nog problems. It would still be hard for white kids growing up in these districts, which is I'm sure part of why people leave. It looks like a takeover, whoever is doing it.
I never watched the Purge but I still always got the impression that the setting was a liberal's idea of right-wing revenge fantasy, even though purges are strictly a revolutionary communist tactic.
To be fair, The Purge 2: Anarchy is a pretty badass movie all thanks to Frank Grillo and his character's arc.
Even though Purge 2 still has its woke elements, it also has some pretty based elements, too.
Frank Grillo's character is literally a ripoff of the Punisher (I mean, practically in everything but name). His character has a souped up Dodge Charger that he armours up and purposely goes out during the Purge. He's basically seeking out the guy who killed his son (the twist at the end is that the guy got off on a drunk driving charge and Grillo's character was going to carry out the justice that he feels the court's failed to).
Grillo cruising the streets looking at the mayhem while laser-focused on his task was some awesome piece of cinema. His character was also armed to the teeth and was ready to kill anyone who got in his way.
Despite its woke elements, Purge 2 was the only one where the White guy (Grillo) was the saviour (just until the end), and had to help a bunch of people navigate to safety. I loved Grillo's no-nonsense, shoot-first, never-ask demeanour and approach to their situation.
OP is right about the others, though. I watched the third one, once again, because Grillo was in it, but man was it too woke to even remotely enjoy a little bit. Grillo did what he could and they obviously brought him back because he was the best part about the second film, but the third film was just stupid all the way around.I can only imagine how much worse the others got.
I've never watched any of them, but my impression was the same. Trying to blame Republicans for something Democrats are doing in real life with their anarcho-tyrannical policies is disgusting propaganda.
If you want to be depressed, look up the people who own Fangoria now.
I've only seen the original Purge, and it was retarded. I picked up on the anti-white narrative even back then, but the whole setup was just ridiculously stupid anyway. These movies/shows/whatever always whitewash the elite whenever they do criticize them. It's disjointed compared to what the Biden administration looks like, for example.
Not to hijack your comment, but to continue on a post I made a couple days ago...
Watched a few more episodes of Outer Limits. One had a widower lamenting the fact that he had cheated on sick wife and that he was somehow dishonoring her by moving on by considering a new relationship after 2 years. The next had a cartoonishly abusive father and a murderous alien. One of the ways the father is shown as "abusing" his son is to tell him to stand up for himself to bullies.
The son ended up siding with the alien that had just eaten his dog and best friend, and vaporized his father (who had just tried to save the son's life) because his dad didn't pay enough attention to him.
Still no abusive mothers/wives that I can recall, nearly 5 seasons in.
Haven't seen any Purge movies, but none of what you say is remotely surprising.
I think Tosh said it best back when there was only one out.
I don't know if that's completely accurate, but I'd imagine if there was it would have caused actual controversy instead of the blase reaction everyone had to the entire series.
Also, even if we keep it to just violence the amount of people who'd resort to random violence is minimal. The amount of people that would take to personal violence is absolutely maximum. Because I think most people have at least one other person who has slighted them so badly they would consider killing them if there were no consequences.
AKA a fucking mass grave of ex-girlfriends who probably did deserve it and enough controversy to actually mean you are making some sort of point, instead of this generic action garbage.
The first Purge would decimate the female population of the US. Women would then try to get the Purge banned, but fail due to reduced numbers from the Purge. The next Purge would Khmer Rouge the women's population in the US. Then the Purge would never be necessary again, anyway.
A mass overrepresentation of men with not enough girls to go around would need a Purge more than ever, that's a pressure cooker of a problem just waiting to explode into something violent without any need for a "sanctioned" crime night.
I only ever saw the election year one and that was terrible. I heard the series was very woke. What you described definitely sounds like any movie in the last 5 to 7 years
I completely forgot this series even existed until now.
See, my big issue with the purge series is that they didn't go dark enough with it. They have a really good plot idea where all crimes are legal for 24hrs, yet solely restrict the focus to murder and nothing else. In their world noone steals, noone does drugs, and more importantly noone tortures. Just once I'd like to see one of their movies open with a guy in an open field pouring gas over people he kidnapped/handcuffed, only to light a match and it zoom out with their contorted/burning bodies spelling out the name of the movie. Would really set a tone for the rest of the film.
That's actually a really creative idea. The movies always brushed up against those ideas but never fully committed to them.
They don't need to be torture-porn, but they really didn't explore the concept to its fullest in any significant way.
Not only did they not explore it, but they went down a very narrow route with it. It's the equivalent of willy wonka solely focusing on chocolate cadburry eggs.
I got a good laugh in the Purge 3 when the black gangster boss told his guys not to loot or steal anything during the purge.
Some of the writing was just unforgivably bad in that one as far as realism. They slowly turned into total fantasies as they progressed.
Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
Hahahaha. Any opportunity in an area with high density of blacks results in stores getting looted. Except book stores.
I can easily imagine tens of millions of anti-gun violence-is-never-the-answer no-human-is-illegal holier-than-thou types flocking to Nextdoor to beg their neighbors to protect them.
The only thing that the purge got even mildly right is some of the vigilantism and revenge shit that would happen.
But yeah, there would be virtually none of the anti-social crap and anyone trying to go off by themselves would be ended pretty soon.
For a film about no laws, it focuses entirely on murder and murder alone. There's no real theft that isn't the most petty of petty, there's no sex crimes, nothing truly selfish, just violence for the sake of violence. It's a very myopic and misanthropic view of humanity
This is true -- as there would definitely be more theft and assaults occurring. Only the second film briefly touches on this as there is a quick glimpse of the aftermath of a girl who is obviously in trauma after what appears to be a gang-rape (as she's covered in blood with torn clothes and emerging from an alley). But there's also a plot point in the second film about a Mexican guy who wants to rape his two neighbours, and once the Purge starts, he goes to do just that.
It's even more retarded because the premise isn't "for 24 hours you can legally murder", it's "for 24 hours all crimes are legal". Rich people aren't going to go out as marauders, they'll get all their embezzling and money laundering done that day. Then they'll use all that wealth to satisfy their sadism at their leisure year round with networks of underground human traffickers, like they do in the real world. A purge day would be to get the plebs to cull themselves.
tbf the whole thing is a farce. Hollywood, for obvious reasons, doesn't do realistic SHTF stuff.
Did his security systems not work? It sounds like a legitimately noble way to make money in the purge.
His neighbors all tried to kill him for "flaunting the money he made off them" so they didn't work out so great for him.
