If you could fire one showrunner of any book/game adaption or remake/"reimagining" that has been done since 2016 who would it be?
Very tough choice for me, but I think I would fire the showrunner for Wheel of Time. I'd love to tell him to his face that I wanted someone to actually adapt the book and to not inject their personal garbage. The guy actually said that he wanted to bring out lgbt stuff that the book only hints at or doesn't go into detail about, but when the book specifically describes how people look, that doesn't seem to matter. Or the whole Dragon Reborn prophecy doesn't seem to matter amongst other things. You could've have had such a popular show with someone who actually cared about adapting the books.
I guess an honorable mention would be to fire in advance the lady who is doing the Chronicles of Narnia butchering.... I mean adaptation for Netflix, but there are so many I could pick.
WoT is hard to beat when it comes to egregiously terrible adaptations. I mean they invented a wife for one of the main characters and then had him accidentally murder her before the main story even gets off the ground. It’s legitimately insane.
The books are a near nonstop parade of bitchy women, nagging and glaring. To be quite frank I don't think you can get a genuinely good TV adaptation out of a series like Wheel of Time.
Sadly to answer your question I'll have to break the rules and go way before 2016. Because my answer is Joss Whedon. I consider him and his shows to be largely responsible for a lot of the more obnoxious personality defects of the millennial generation.
What about an anime style adaptation for WOT? Joss Whedon created Buffy right?
An anime might work if you could get it in a more watercolor style. Dunno if Ghibli is in the market for more though.
And yes he's the creepy pervert behind the Buffy series.
Yeah I read the first WoT book and decided not to bother with any more. Too many scenes involving a guy missing/screwing up while some thot near him aces it perfectly (and the author took the time to write how she smirks at him).
I don't think I made it past book 3. The exchange went something like "I swear if he says some butch folds her arms under her breasts again..." And then literally the next page. Tossed it aside.
What is crazy is that they meet people of different races once they go on their journey and see other countries but I guess that isn’t good enough. It makes perfect sense that an isolated village would be racially homogenous. The casting choices were my first indication the showrunner was a moron.
Gotta erase those white specific hair colors.
Most of it is post-Obama entitlement complex and, of course, petty feminism.
I'd probably get rid of Kurtzman but most female/male feminist directors will do. I've long since learned to distance myself from pop culture products. They're always going to disappoint in some way or the other.
If I get a cut of the profits, then Star Wars easily. Disney sacrificed a huge cash cow at the altar of woke there. I was also in to it as a kid, albeit aside from turning on one of the old movies every few years I don’t pay attention anymore.
While true, I think ruining Star Wars was a red pill dispensing machine
As a huge fan of the EU I’ll forever hold that grudge against Disney. They couldn’t just continue that universe in its own timeline?
Hubris, greed and "the message" are my top 3 likely reasons.

Screw that, balefire the fucktard!
True. First I’d ask him to be honest and admit he never bothered to read the books
yep WOT is basically sacrilege. LOTR Prequel would be close runner up. But actuallt i'm most pissed off with Foundation - simply because it's just not enjotyable.
Going off on a tangent - if you read Discworld, the best adaptation so far was the recent Amazing Maurice.
I’ve read some disc world books and they were enjoyable. How bad did they ruin Foundation? I saw an interview where the showrunner talked about asking permission to race and gender swap so that kinda tells you about priorities. I’ll look up amazing Maurice
Also bear in mind that Apple's Asimov fanfic has ninja robot assassins.
Asimov specifically created the Three Laws because he found the "killer robot" trope so bloody boring.
Also, re the foundation tech in the books, at one point, somebody from the remnants of the Galactic Empire takes a potshot at a Foundation agent ... and is shocked to find that the Foundation has managed to shrink shielding down to a personal level. The Empire has shielding, sure - on warships. That's how far ahead of the Galactic Empire the Foundation gets to.
Yup, and I take your point on the imagery of the two.
In context, the Galactic Empire is a little like the Soviet Union - vast resources meant it was never really concerned with efficiency. Worst case, they can always throw more people at a particular problem to make it go away.
Compare the US of the same period, all high-tech gizmos and widgets of phenomenal cost to drive the highest performance out of every thing they had.
Its a shame. The opportunity was totally there and the creatively bankrupt who aren't familiar with the source material botched things, as is usual in 'current year.'
If would bargain mightily to see what the whole arc of the Mule would look like in your version, the anguish of the psychohistorians as their algorithms fail and Foundation's faith is shaken by a vault that has nothing to do with their crisis....
It would have been a great second or third season.
Foundation is one of those where if you've read the books , the adaptations are a pale imitation. I haven't bothered watching season 2. Some of the sfx were ok but the pacing was too slow and convoluted.
I’ve read the first book, but haven’t gotten around to the rest.
Holy shit, I had no idea that existed.
As someone who is currently reading the Foundation series (currently half way through Foundation and Empire) I can't see how you could make a good adaption. If you made it true to the books you would end up with a commercial failure as it would confuse too many troglodytes. :P
Greta Gerwig doing the Narnia adaptation makes me more than a little upset, so probably her.
Yea, I seriously doubt she will have any respect for the source material
At least we got the movies in the pre-2015 era of cinema. They weren't half-bad, if I remember correctly.
Too many to choose from if I go Disney franchises, Star Wars, Artemis Foul, even Pixar stuff like choosing to make a 4th Toy Story after the 3rd had a perfect send off.
I'm instead going to go the Witcher Netflix series, with Henry Cavill being such a fan of the franchise and the main star, from everything that came out after he left it sounds like a change in showrunner COULD have saved that series as then he'd be the strongest person in that production.
I have the Witcher books in my immediate “to read stack” along with Elric books. I played the game and it was fun. This show could’ve been huge. Cavill is too polite to really tear them apart, that one writer said everything we suspected. Then it came out that the person in charge of casting didn’t want to cast a beautiful white woman for dumb woke reasons. I’ve only heard of Artemis Foul. What did they do to it?
DON'T look up the trailers, if you've read the books it physically hurts how they turned what was essentially a kid friendly version of Light, a child criminal mastermind into generic child protagonist 48.
Whoever is in charge of Good Omens needs to be replaced with someone who can keep Neil Gaiman in control and not do a plot that falls apart
Joss Whedon, but not because of Buffy like the other poster, I mean it in the sense of these movies as the reimagining and adaptations of the Marvel universe. He made his mark on the industry, you can see movies and shows all over that now emulate his particular "style". He saw incredible success, and it ruined an industry because of it.
Yes
Either Lauren Hissrich, the fucking cunt behind the abomination that is Shitflix's The Witcher. Or Shin Itagaki, the incompetent retard behind the disastrous 2016 anime adaptation of Berserk.
How did they mess up Berserk? One of the many mangas on my list to buy
I'll just let this clip do the talking. But in short, everything about this series was atrocious. The animation, the sound design, the soundtrack, the voice acting, the visuals, the atmosphere, the action, the storyboarding, the actual storytelling...all of it was horrendous on an amateur level. This was not the kind of thing that should have ever passed muster in a professional setting, and it's clear the idiot in charge had no idea what the hell he was doing. And this happened to Berserk, where the manga is an absolute masterclass in art and storytelling, which made the whole production come off as a gigantic middle finger to its creator and fans.
The twats who will undoubtedly try to ruin X-Men '97
I don’t have Disney plus anymore but I had some hope when the writer for it called out the writers of the Witcher show for their hatred of source material but then the showrunner started with the “as a black gay man…..”
If you give me the choice, I'm gonna choose to preemptively nuke whoever they put in charge of Cavill's new 40K project. Leave Cavill in charge.
I want a Win for once in Berenstain universe.
I thought Cavill was in charge?
I don't trust that he really is.
Yes. I've been hurt before.
Wheel of Time (the books) were already obnoxiously feminist. I can't even imagine how bad the adaptation was.
That’s what surprised me. Plus once they leave their village they come across different races/cultures in different countries but that’s not enough.
True but I think there is so much rot that just getting rid of her is the first in many steps
