There is also the issue of superhero movies not being judged in a vacuum. They have to compete not just with what is currently out, but literally all the other ones that are still super fresh in people's memories.
Its no longer enough to just use pure name recognition or "who the fuck is that, I must know" to sell these things. They need something legit special to not just get ignored while someone goes watch Avengers 1 or Shazam or Deadpool again.
Jaime was great in the Young Justice animated series, unfortunately Young Justice itself suffered horribly due to other things like the Green Lantern film bombing so badly it all but wiped out the DC action figure line sales which removed funding for YJ and other things. It eventually got renewed and luckily benefited from the time passing in a similar way that Toy Story 3 benefited from being so many years after the first.
Making General Zod black was a hilarious decision, however. Not only did it mean the conflict was drawn along racial lines, but black Kryptonians should be weaker than others because the melanin, or Kryptonian equivalent, blocks sunlight.
Not that I ever expect modern comic writers/adaptors to pick up on this.
If the DC movie universe hadn't been complete dogshit from the beginning they could have made a movie like this work. Absolutely nobody knew who the Guardians of the Galaxy were before that movie came out and it was so good it transformed Chris Pratt from "schlubby comedy guy" to "good looking action hero".

The original GotG team from 1990 was Nikki, Vance, Charlie, Yondu, Martinex and Starhawk, of which only one name would immediately stand out to MCU viewers until the point gets made that Starhawk was Sly Stallone's character from the movies. Of the rest only Charlie and Martinex appeared in the MCU, both being raceswapped oddly enough, while Nikki's cameo was cut and Vance wouldn't have been allowed at the time due to being a mutant.
That said it's not the worst MCU adaptation of a group, that honour goes to the Eternals which is meant to be more than just 10 randoms slumming about Earth for all of human history.
