After looking into it more, this guy was very smart. Every community he created around his mod was moderated by only him. He can't be kicked out of any of them. Had he made the mistake of letting well-intention-seeming associates in to mod his communities - he would have found himself out on his ass. Even his subreddit has only him as the mod.

Second Update: Looks back, and Lenny Lennington (the guy in question) purged all other admins. He doesn't waste much time, hes back to work on the mod.

Shitlibs instinctively gravitate towards the therapeutic narratives. As in societal conflicts, they consider themselves to hold the one true objective scientific stance and therefore people believing anything else are somehow pathological and need to be either treated ("just go to therapy chud") or sectioned/quarantine'd. In case you are stuck at the start line, they don't care about winning le epic battle of ideas in the free marketplace or whatever horseshit morons fell for in the 1950s and keep doing so to this day, they are interested in power and using that power to punish chuds.
In this particular case, they take the tech-equivalent route of therapeutic management, which is security fagging. It is somewhat novel approach, in it that they do not have specially crafted words and concepts for ideologically-based security vulnerability, but this works for now until some epic paper/presentation introduces a new word for chuds being problematic from security standpoint.

Minecraft had a launcher before Microsoft bought them, but like OP mentioned, it's mainly for mods/easily install modpacks. Never heard of PolyMC, but I also haven't played Minecraft since 1.17.10, really. Always used MultiMC.
PolyMC is a fork from MultiMC when MultiMC announced they couldn't download modpacks anymore. Individual mods are still fine, but full modpacks became impossible. PolyMC just went 'Fuck that noise' and continued on.
Some copyright issue? How lame. The modding scene, from what I can tell, has gone to complete shit. 1.17.10 was the golden age, IMO. It lasted for so long. Now, there's a new version of Minecraft out like every other week. It's ridiculous.
The PC version of minecraft is so heavily modded that launchers are often needed to sort out which mods and modpacks are being used to integrate with the Java version.
I find that I have to use one if I want to play with friends just so that we can ensure we're using the correct versions of the correct mods and these launchers make it fairly easy.
Shitlibs should be removed from every position where they have any power at all.
