It's not even a good game to begin with, and they rewrote things for "sensitivity" purposes? Dead in the water.

EDIT: Actually read some of those reviews. Apparently the remaster itself runs poorly for many. How do you fuck that up with such an old game at a higher display quality?

Wow, Japanese developers releasing a dogshit PC port? Must be a day ending in Y.

Its because japs can't program in x64.

Even well in the PS4, most games were 32 bit. Then they have to make it run on a x64 pc. It doesn't work out so well, because its only 8x more complicated.

Also PlayStation and PC chipsets are radically different (they do NOT use DirectX because Microsoft owns DirectX), and PlayStation games are coded to by pass drivers or API layers and work directly with the PS chip's instruction sets. So they have to emulate a PlayStation then run the game on top of that a hope it all works.

The lack of native coding is one of the reasons we see so few masterpieces these days outside of Nintendo. BotW was incredible and groundbreaking because it was coded natively for the Switch (and Wii U, which ostensibly used a fairly similar OS and hardware environment to the Switch). It wasn't a framework on top of an API on top of another framework so they could release it on every platform known to man for maximum profit. Every time you add a third party library, every time you use an existing engine, every time you increase portability, you're making the game slower and less stable. No exceptions.

If they had tried to make BotW in Unreal Engine and release it for the PS4 and Xbox One, it would have run like dogshit despite those consoles being much more powerful than the Switch.

I can think of some things you probably wouldn't want to reimplement yourself. Video encode/decode, for one. Cryptography.

A developer COULD use the time they save by reusing code in order to optimize the end result and end up with a better product. They may choose not to.

I would assume the console makers provide platform native APIs for that kind of functionality, though they might be relatively low level. This would seem to confirm Nintendo does for video decoding.

A developer COULD use the time they save by reusing code in order to optimize the end result and end up with a better product. They may choose not to.

I definitely agree that it's not necessarily the use of third-party engines or APIs that results in poor optimization. And it's also certainly true that going the DIY route does not necessarily mean a well-optimized game, as Game Freak has demonstrated on the Switch.

not even a good game

Never played it but I remember how the early 2000s era internet worshipped it and Mother, another SNES JPRG.

You're thinking of Chrono Trigger, which I thought was a great game.

Chrono cross was a shitty sequel on the PS1

There's no need to play anything other than the original SNES version. No need to over complicate the decision making process.

Chrono Trigger was originally a Super Nintendo game. However, it was available on PS1 as part on Final Fantasy Chronicles. The opening gives you a taste of the game. If you like JRPGs, it's great!

I never liked it either...

Trigger was great. Cross was horrible, gameplay-wise and story-wise, though it and Batman did end up giving me a harlequin fetish.

They re-released Mother 1+2 for the gba and it’s pretty good, added a whole lot of qol fixes, a run button, etc,. theres a translation patch for the rom out there somewhere.

Another issue is that "censorship" means different things to different people. If a Japanese game contains a reference to an obscure Japanese comedy troupe from the 50s that literally nobody outside of Japan would understand, is it censorship to localize that reference to the Three Stooges when translating for a western market? Some would argue it is.

Then you get into a death by a thousand cuts thing. If it's okay to localize a reference, then it's okay to localize language. And if it's okay to localize language, it's okay to localize prevailing attitudes. And if it's okay to localize attitudes, it's okay to adjust for cultural differences. And so forth.

There isn't one point along that slow slide toward the memory hole that everyone agrees is the correct stopping point. Nobody can agree even on what it is they're rallying against. Not even here.

I'd prefer to leave the obscure references; that's the risk you take for being topical. Also, translators notes can help here.

Also, I love Japanese puns that don't translate to English and so just come off as bizarre.

It really depends on your target audience. Is the game for children or adults? What are the prevailing cultural attitudes in the market? Is your audience hardcore weebs or just people who want the latest fun game? Do you want to inclusively target the elusive woke person of color girl gamer, or do you want to actually sell your product? All of these factors play into how you localize a product.

"Translators Notes" are not something you want in a commercial product, except maybe in a bonus content section. A translation must effortlessly convey the original idea (or an equivalent approximation) without the listener having to think about it.

I almost never see anyone try to argue censorship is "good"

It can be an understandable reaction to the more visceral woke propaganda going about like with troons and pRedditors trying to get their hands on both the minds and bodies of children however the idea of "sunlight is the best disinfectant" still holds up as when these stories [that never happen] are reported widescale [which is also a big 'if' due to things being memory-holed] then even normies stop and think "WTF" about some of the things going on.

Then of course a war breaks out somewhere or some other convenient distraction "comes along" so unfortunately keeping that attention is like herding cats while trying to lead a group of Labrador puppies.

Taking an already controversial and hated game, failing to properly optimize and bug test it, and then censoring a bunch of shit.

Its like they deliberately set out to fail.

You have X dollars.

You may spend it on:

A) Being woke.

B) Making your game run properly.

Waiting...

You have chosen "A".

Result: Mostly Negative.

The Japanese version changed too, so this isn't on the localization team. The old Japanese has ladylike, the new Japanese version basically says a little nicer.
